GRANTER, Barry Samuel - 3 AUG 1950 - 13 OCT 2010 - Born in Gander, NL August 3, 1950 passed away peacefully at South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater, October 13, 2010 with his loving family by his side. Barry is survived by his loving wife Joan of 40 years, of which he always said was his "perfect 10"; daughter, Karen (Billy Lunn); granddaughters, Bronwyn, Chantelle and Mattingly, Beaverbank; son, Adrian (Jennifer); grandson Dylan, Lower Sackville; son, Nicholas (Lindsay) Qatar; parents Mona and Chesley of Gander NL; brother, Bryne (Anne Marie), Fox Trap, NL and a wide circle of extended family, friends and co-workers. Not one for dwelling on sadness, Barry would like to be remembered to those lives he touched as loving, funny and ever witty. His brief but fierce battle with cancer didn't waiver his zest for making everyone laugh. He was full of life until the end, often saying "it is what it is". Barry worked with various airlines starting in 1970 with EPA, Canadian Pacific, CP Air and Air Nova. In 2001 he began a new chapter in his career with the Health Care District in Saskatchewan, then as Administrator of Villa St. Joseph, Yarmouth and most recently Administrator of Harbour View Haven, Lunenburg. As well, he served as a trustee for the NSAHO and was extremely dedicated to the continuing care community. Barry was proud of his colleagues that worked well together as a team to help provide the best care possible to the residents while he strived to make every day enjoyable for both the residents and the staff. He was known as an avid reader of all genres from mystery and non-fiction to watches and motorcycles which he said made him full of "useless information," although he never did lose a game of Trivial Pursuit. During the holidays, the kid in Barry would come out. Walking around the house wearing rabbit ears or antlers and if he got the chance, he would think nothing of throwing a cold bucket of water on you over the shower curtain. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, often taking them to feed the ducks in Bridgwater during their frequent sleepovers at Nana's and Papa's. His favourite time of the day was snuggling by the fire with his soul mate Joan. He always welcomed a crowd in the house and gave a hearty wave good-bye when they left. Barry's true roots lye in Newfoundland, which he referred to as "Gods Country." There will be a celebration of his life on Friday October 15th, 2010 at 2PM at the Cornerstone Wesleyan Church, 1215 Hammonds Plains Road, Hammonds Plains, NS with a reception to follow. The help of family, neighbours, coworkers and friends over the past 6 months has been immeasurable. We would like to give a heartfelt thank you to our long time family doctor, Dr. Killeen and his wife Linda, Dr. Morzycki, Dr. Bethune, Dr. Holenhurst.and the VG Nurses. A special thanks to Dr. Robertson, Dr.Abriel and the Palliative care team, especially Heather Cameron, ambulance staff, nurses and all other staff at South Shore Regional Hospital, the VON Nurses-Home Care, as well as Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater NS. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to DASC Industries, 10 Akerley Blvd, Dartmouth, NS B3B 1J4 email www.dasc-ns.ca a not for profit agency for adults with intellectual disabilities where his daughter, Karen is employed as a supervisor and who is just as dedicated to her profession as her father was to his. Of note, Barry's brother in law, Joan's brother, Darryl lives with an intellectual disability and has had a better quality of life as a result of such organizations as Karen works for.
