PAUL, Lily (nee Bragg) -
Passed peacefully away on June 2, 2003 at Agnes Pratt Home, St. John's, Lily Paul in her 90th year. Predeceased by her husband, Gideon (1990); and sons, Austin and Martin. Left to mourn are daughters, Jennifer (Graham) Hill, Rosemary (George) White, Carolyn (Paul) Shoemaker, son, Eric (Roma); grandchildren, Deirdre Hill, Jocelyn Hill (Darren Clarke), Kathryn (Jeff) Kehoe, Susan (Steve) French, Robert white, Anthony (Sharon) Paul, Nancy Paul (Greg Kirby); great-grandchildren, Emily and Gregory Kehoe; sister-in-law, Pearl Eastman; and many other relatives and friends. Rested at Pritchett's Funeral Home. Funeral service was held on June 5th at Emmanuel United Church, Gambo. Donations in her memory may be made to Emmanuel United Church, the Canadian Diabetes Association or to a charity of one's choice.

MERCER, LEWIS -
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Lewis Mercer of Gander, announce his passing on June 6, 2003 at Lakeside Homes, Gander, age 88 years. Pre-deceased by his parents, John and Emma Mercer of Bay Roberts and son, Noel. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Gladys, four daughters, Carol (John Walsh), Joy (Robert Janes), Bonita Bretz (Jacobus Maritz), all of Gander, Colleen (John Clarke) of Halifax, and one son, Keith (Louise) of St. John's; seven grandchildren, Randy (Lynn) Walsh and Rick (Ledona) Walsh , Michael Bretz, Grant and Brad Janes, Alec and Lauren Clarke, Meaghan, Michael, and Caitlin Hutchings; 3 great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Keshia and Brittany Walsh, four brothers, Eric (Dorothy) of North River, Reginald of St. John's, Gerald (Corrine) of Gander, Neil (Anne) of St. John's and one sister, Marina (Ed James) of Stephenville, sister-in-law, Winnifred Morgan of Port de Grave. Lew was a Past Exalted Ruler of the B.P.O. Elks; Gander, past president of the Gander Minor Hockey Association; and a member of Gander Masonic, Airways Lodge 26. Funeral services were held on June 8th from St. Martin's Anglican Cathedral, Gander. Interment at All Saint's Cemetery, Gander. Donations in his memory can be made to a charity of one's choice. PARSONS, OLIVE -
Passed peacefully away on June 6, 2003 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, Olive Parsons of Lumsden, age 84. Predeceased by sisters, Anne Sheppard, Delila Fassenia and Pearl Ledrew; brothers-in-law, Frank Wheaton and George Chaulk. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are husband, Wilson; son, Lawrence (Betty) of Lumsden; brothers, Ralph West (Melsie) and Clarence West (Juanita) all of Carmanville; sisters, Althea Wheaton of Frederickton and Gertrude Chaulk of Deadman's Bay; five grandchildren, Glen, Merlin, Laurie, Ardella and Adrian; four great-grandchildren, Julie Lee, Ixara, Todd and Reagan; and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Funeral service was held on June 9th at the United Church, Lumsden with Rev. M. Bowlby officiating. Interment followed at the United Church Cemetery, Lumsden. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Kittiwake Funeral Home, Pound Cove-Musgrave Harbour.

MATTHEWS, Betsy Jane (nee Bursey) -
Passed away on June 7, 2003 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, Mrs. Betsy Jane Matthews (nee Bursey), in her 75th year. Predeceased by husband, Clifford Louis Matthews. Left with fond and loving memories are sons, Paul and wife Marie of St. John's, Derrick and wife Kelly of Halifax, Phillip and wife Shauna of Gander, Burt and wife Mary of Kelligrews; daughters, Lorraine Matthews of Ottawa, Pauline and husband Nigel Summers of Gander; brothers, Harvey and wife Florence of St. John's, David and wife Olive of St. John's, Peter and wife Anna of Lower Island Cove, Pauline Corbett of St. John's; sister-in-law, Marie Bursey of Montreal; 10 grandchildren and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Funeral service was held on June 9th at Fraser Road United Church in Gander with cremation to follow. Inurnment took place at All Saints United Cemetery on June 10th. RODGERS, Nellie (August 11, 1920 - June 8, 2003) -
Passed peacefully away on June 8, 2003 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, Mrs. Nellie Rodgers of Gander. Predeceased by husband, Chesley, March 2003; sisters, Laura Burry, Ada Blackmore and Sophia Boland; and brother, Percy Norris. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are son, Gordon (Paula) of Mount Pearl; daughters, Marie (Charlie Weaver) of Gander, Olive Burke of Corner Brook and Linda Rogers of Montreal; seven grandchildren, Julie and Jeanne Weaver, Heather, Andrea and David Burke, David and Christopher Rodgers; great-grandson, Chase; sister, Bessie Harris; sister-in-law, Marion Norris; plus a large number of relatives and friends. WHITTEN, Elizabeth -
Passed away on June 9, 2003 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, Elizabeth Whitten of Gander. Predeceased by husband, Gerry (1974). Left with loving memories are son, Garry (Sharon) of Gander; daughter, Jacqueline (Marcel) of Rimouski, PQ; brother, Fred Fleming of Harbour Main, NL: sister, Connie Taplin of Holyrood, NL; three grandchildren, Denise, Brian and Marco. She is fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews, her many close friends and her Bingo buddies. Funeral mass was held on June 12th at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Gander. LUDLOW, Louise -
Formerly of Roger's Cove, Gander Bay, passed peacefully away in Edmonton, Alberta on June 10, 2003 at the age of 91 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Sadie of Fort McMurray and Eileen (Ed) of Edmonton; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; brothers, Lester and Lewis (Margaret) and sister, Violet, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Chesley and son, John in 1964; son, Ben and daughter, Kathleen in 1997 and grandchildren, Mary Ludlow, Debbie Hillier and Freddy Bird. Memorial service was held August 10, 2003 from Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Wings Point, Gander Bay, with interment of ashes at the Victoria Cove Cemetery also in Gander Bay.

POND, Minnie -
Passed peacefully away on June 14, 2003 at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, St. John's, Minnie Pond of Trinity, age 64. Predeceased by parents, Wilfred and Myrtle Norris and son, Wilfred Nathan. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are husband, Peter; son, Ivan (Claudette) of Trinity; daughters, Janet Feltham (John), Josephine Wells (Lorne), Mary Jane Wells (Tony) and Mildred Collins (Allister), all of Trinity; brother, Job Norris (Bernice) of Sandy Point; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a large circle of family and friends. Funeral service was held on June 17 at the Anglican Church, Trinity with Rev. R. Osmond officiating. Interment followed at the Anglican Cemetery, Trinity. HODDER, Wilfred J. -
Passed peacefully away on June 15, 2003 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, Wilfred J. Hodder, age 77 years. Predeceased by parents, John and Edith Hodder; brothers, Stewart and Kenneth; sisters, Alfreda and Marjorie. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are wife, Blanche; daughter, Dora; brothers, Norman (Emma) and Maxwell; sisters, Dora and Olive; also a large number of relatives and friends. Passed peacefully away on June 15, 2003 at the Palliative Care Unit, L.A. Miller Centre, St. John's, Laura Claire Hancock (Lane), age 95 years. Predeceased by her husband, Henry James Hancock, 1944. Left to mourn with loving and cherished memories are daughter, Nellie Powell of Happy Adventure; and son, Herman Hancock of Gander; grandchildren, James Sterwart Powell (Judy) of St. John's, Perry Hancock (Monique) of Toronto, and Glen Hancock of St. John's; great-grandchildren, Lorie Powell of Whitehorse, Mike Powell of Ottawa, Alexander Hancock of St. John's and Sarah Hancock of St. John's. HUMPHRIES, Maggie -
Passed peacefully away on June 15, 2003 at Bonnews Lodge, Badger's Quay, Maggie Humphries of Lumsden, age 93. Predeceased by husband, Hedley; son, Samuel; granddaughter, Deena Lynn; parents, Edwin and Lucy Gibbons; sisters, Amelia Hann, Eva Gibbons, Matilda Gibbons, Alice Dewling, Daisy Gibbons and Rita Gibbons. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are son, Gilbert Humphries (Myrtle) of Bay Roberts; daughter, Matilda Stagg (Cyril) of Lumsden, daughter-in-law, Blanche Humphries, Harbour Breton, grandchildren, Tony (Kathi), Janet (Larry), Fay, Patti-Ann (Frank), Craig (Eileen), Trudy (Derrick), Brian (Janice), Dean, Denise (Cluney) and Jason; 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and a large circle of family and friends. CRISBY, Muriel L. (Sept. 26, 1908 - Jun. 17, 2003) -
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Muriel Crisby announce her passing on June 17, 2003, at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, at the age of 94. Predeceased by husband, Jabez and daughter, Constance Balazic. Left to mourn with wonderful lasting memories are her son, James of Eastport; granddaughter, Jeannie (Boyd) of Calgary; sister, Gertrude Russell of Toronto; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Benjamin; a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral service was held on June 20th at Holy Cross Anglican Church, Eastport and officiated by Rev. P. Thoms. Interment was held at Holy Cross Anglican Cemetery. Donations were gratefully accepted and donated to Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre.
Muriel was a remarkable woman who will live in our hearts forever.

GOODYEAR, Alexander (Sandy) -
Passed peacefully away at his residence on June 17, 2003, Alexander (Sandy) Goodyear of Lumsden, age 86. Predeceased by parents, Hedley and Keziah Goodyear; infant children, Norman and Hedley; brothers, Theophilus and Clarence Goodyear; sister, Emiline (Brenson); stepbrother, Llewelyn Palmer; mother and father-in-law, George and Louisa Goodyear; and brother-in-law, James Goodyear. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are wife, Trixie; sons, Sidney (Paula) of Lynn Lake, Manitoba, Herbert (Edna) of Main Point, Gander Bay and Clarence (Wanda) of Lumsden; daughters, Winnie Goodyear (Ernest) of Lumsden, Maxine Howell (Glyn) of Templeman and Roma Goodyear (Paul) of Lumsden; brother, Ross King of Bunyan's Cove, 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a large circle of family and friends. McGUIRE, Kathleen -
Passed suddenly away on June 17, 2003 at the Central Newfoundland Regional Hospital, Kathleen McGuire of Gander. Predeceased by brothers, Ambrose and Patrick; sisters, Mary, Anne and Shirley. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are husband, Joe; sons, Joe (Penney) of Dartmouth, NS, John of Clarenville, NL, Mike (Debbie) of Lower Sackville, NS, and Mark (Leanne) of St. John's; daughters, Pat (Scott Healey) of Scurry, BC, Barb (Bill Lorenzen) of Charlottetown, PEI, Sue (Al Baird) of St. Albert, Alberta, and Cindy (Todd Levy) of Amherst, NS; grandchildren,, Justin, Eric, Kayla, Josh, Jeremy, Ryan, Katie, Andrew, Matthew, Nathan, Jessica and Adam, Aiden and Alex; brother, John O'Reilly of St. John's, NL; sisters, Cecilia Nolan of Gander, NL and Ruth O'Reilly of Bishop's Falls, NL; also a large number of relatives and friends. Passed away on June 18, 2003 at her residence in Musgrave Harbour, Mrs. Eileen Hayward, in her 71st year. Predeceased by her parents, Pearl and Obed Rideout. Left with fond and loving memories are her husband, Cluney; three daughters, Mae Abbott (Chesley) of Musgrave Harbour, Eunice Mouland (Wade) of Musgrave Harbour and Patricia Pevie (Wade) of Labrador City; two brothers, Melvin Rideout (Betty Jane) of Pelley's Island and John Rideout (Jean) of Musgrave Harbour; one sister, Lillian Bridger (Eric) of Brighton; five grandchildren, Cluney, April, Mitchell, Many and Annette; four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Toby, Ashley and Morgan; and also a large circle of other relatives and friends. Passed away on June 19, 2003 at Lakeside Homes, Gander, Pearl Eastman in her 89th year. Predeceased by her husband, Israel (1995) and the rest of her family. Passed peacefully away on June 19, 2003 at Bonnews Lodge, Badger's Quay, Joan Humphries, formerly of Cape Freels, age 82. Predeceased by husband, Carmen; son, Lester; daughter, Anne Knight; parents, Edward and Anne Stagg; sisters, Sybil, Statie and Violet. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are sons, Ray (Joyce) of Lumsden, Jake (Ada) of Wesleyville, Martin (Elizabeth) of Wesleyville and Lindsay (Margaret) of Gander; daughters, Margaret Mitchell (Irvan) of Gander and Emma smith (Don) of Ottawa; son-in-law, Paul Knight of Mt. Pearl; brothers, Cecil Stagg of Wesleyville, Gilbert Stagg of Lumsden and Esau Stagg (Faith) of St. John's; sister, Rhyme Humphries (Ernie) of St. John's; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a large circle of family and friends. BLACKWOOD, Ambrose -
Passed peacefully away on June 23, 2003 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, Ambrose Blackwood of Gambo. Predeceased by father, Naboth and mother, Rosanna of Brookfield and sister, Kathleen of St. Anthony. Left with fond and loving memories are wife, Daphne; children, Wayne (Geraldine), Deanne (James), Kathleen (Jerry), Lorne, Eleanor (Paul), Glenn (June), and Heather (Donald); grandchildren, Chris, Suanne, Jennifer, Jamie, Michael, Jill, Aimee, Bethany, Andrew, Aaron and Heidi; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Noah; sister, Ethel Saunders; and numerous friends and relatives. Rested at Pritchett's Funeral Home, Gambo. Funeral took place on June 26th at Emmanuel United Church, Gambo.

LAURELL, Roma -
A Celebration of Life Service for Roma Laurell will be held Saturday, July 5th, 2 p.m. at St. Martin's Anglican Church, Gander. Roma passed away peacefully at her home in Bedford, NS on April 8, 2003, after a year and a half long battle with cancer. She was the wife of the late Gunnar Laurell, a local Gander-based pilot, and leaves to mourn daughters, Christine and Inga Laurell; her grandson, Mattias; brothers, Albert Moss and Clyde Moss; sisters, Queena Healey and Vera Deraps; and all her extended family and friends in the Gander and Eastport area. Roma was born in Happy Adventure, Bonavista Bay in 1937, and was a long-time resident of Gander before moving to Nova Scotia several years ago where she was reunited with many of her life-long Gander friends and neighbours who had also moved to the Halifax area. Throughout her illness she was blessed with the constant company, laughter, and care of these friends, her daughter, Inga and sister, Queena and visits by daughter, Christine from Vancouver Island, and relatives from Newfoundland. She remained humorous and gracious on her 66th birthday on April 3rd and left us quietly five days later. We welcome you to share memories and celebrate her life on Saturday, July 5th at 2 p.m. at St. Martin's Anglican Church, followed by a tea at the Anglican Church Hall. GLOVER, IONA -
Passed peacefully away on June 26, 2003 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, Mrs. Iona Glover, in her 60th year. Mrs. Glover is predeceased by her husband, John in 1999. Left with fond and loving memories are parents, Clayton and Grace Langdon of Gander; son, Roger Barrow and wife, Glenda of Mount Pear; brothers, Elmo Langdon and wife, Dawn of Gander; Norman Langdon and wife, Margaret of Ontario, Calvin Langdon and wife, Joan of Gander; Derek Langdon and wife, Lorrenda of Gander; Pastor Gary Langdon and wife, Kathy of Stanhope; sisters, Lavina and husband, Roderick Jeans of Lewisporte, Donna and husband Isaac Blake of Goose Bay, Marilyn and husband, Thomas Lovell of Ontario; grandchildren, Erika, Michenda, Alecia; and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Funeral service was held on Sunday, June 30th at the Salvation Army Citadel in Gander. Donations may be made to the Newfoundland and Labrador Cancer Research Foundation or the Salvation Army Gander Corps. Interment at All Saints Cemetery, Gander. HAYWARD, Florence (Bemister) -
Passed peacefully away into the presence of our Lord on June 28, 2003, at the Health Science Centre in St. John's, NL; Florence Hayward (Bemister) of Mount Pearl, formerly of Musgrave Harbor, age 57. Predeceased by her husband, Boyd Hayward in June of 1990 and father, Simeon Bemister in May of 1984. Left to mourn are mother, Pearl Tulk (Bemister); best friend and loving companion, Wilfred Lush; children, Dwayne, Derrick and Michelle; grandchildren, Lee, Nichole, Vanessa, Melissa, Kayla and Ronnie; daughters-in-law, Tammy and Angela; son-in-law, Fred; sisters, Maisie, Marie, Maunda, Goldie and Beulah; brothers-in-law, Richard, Aubrey, David, Ward and Mark; brothers, Elmore, Ronald, Wilbert, Eldon, Clarence, Aubrey and Terry; sisters-in-law, Irene, Emily, Jill, Hazel and Carol. Special thanks extended to Pastor and Mrs. Joy and the Park Avenue and Musgrave Harbor Pentecostal Church for their prayers and at home services they shared with Florence in her time of need. Thanks also extended to Dr. Lang, Dr. Greenland, all nurses and staff of the Health Science Centre and the Cancer Clinic. Thanks as well to all friends and family. Funeral service took place on July 1st at the Pentecostal Church in Musgrave Harbour with Pastor Joy officiating, assisted by Pastor Rowsell. Burial followed at the Pentecostal Cemetery in Musgrave Harbor.
Rest in peace, Dear Florence. We love you and will think of you often. Your love, kindness, laugh, tender touch and beautiful glowing smile will be greatly missed.
