DEMPSEY, James -
Passed away peacefully Sunday, February 1, 2009 in Halifax, NS, James Dempsey, aged 94 of Gander, NL. Born December 27th, 1914 in St. John's, NL, he was the son of James and Angela (nee O'Keefe) Dempsey. One of Gander's pioneers, he arrived from Botwood in 1939 working as a radio operator/technician with the British Air Ministry and later Transport Canada. He was a part of world history for his involvement with the Hindenburg, the first Transatlantic flying boats, the Bismarck, the Caribou and the Sabena Airlines Crash at St. Martin's in the Woods and many others. His lifelong passion for the sea, travel and his rare radio telegraphy skills kept him busy well into his retirement years. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Vera E. Dempsey (nee Greene), two sisters and five brothers. He is survived by three daughters; Patricia Hiscock, Halifax, NS, Jane (Patrick) Donnelly, Angus, ON and Helen (George) Simmons, St. Albert, AB also two brothers, Patrick Dempsey, St. John's, NL and Joseph Dempsey, Halifax, NS and six grandchildren, Christopher (Tilly) Hiscock, Surrey, BC, George (Buddy) Simmons, Victoria, BC, Deanna Simmons, Edmonton, AB, Kyle (Gail Stephenson) Donnelly, Barrie, ON, Krista (Kaare) Hagar, Victoria, BC and Timothy Ryan Simmons, St. Albert, AB as well as two great-grandchildren, Joshua Adam Hiscock and Stephanie Hiscock, Surrey, BC. Funeral service was held February 6th from St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Gander. Interment All Saints Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Gander Knights of Columbus scholarship fund or the charity of your choice. STRANG, David William -
Passed away at his residence on Sunday, February 1, 2009, David William Strang in his 75th year. Husband of Frances Strang (Green). Cremation has taken place. A celebration service of life was held, Friday evening at 9:15 p.m. from Stacey's Funeral Home, Gander. Inurnment Saturday, February 7th from the United Cemetery, Gambo. Passed peacefully away on February 2, 2009 at the Health Science Centre St. John's, Vera Attwood, aged 76 years of Badger's Quay. Predeceased by her husband, Maxwell; parents, Joseph and Eliza Feltham; sisters, Pearl and Annie; brothers, Johnny, Fred, Cyril and great-grandson, Nathan. Passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at the James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre, Gander, Everett Cyril Parsons, aged 77 years. Predeceased by parents, Eli and Emma; and baby brother, Arthur. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife, Margaret; daughters, Dallas (Derrell), Mary (Glenn), Carol-ann (Danny and Lisa (Christopher); and son, Robert (Ursula): eight grandchildren, Terri (Dan), Matthew, Donovan, Danielle, Leslie, Tyler, Dylan and Rebecca; sisters, Melcie and Alma and a large circle of relatives and friends. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Raymond Alfred John Pope, aged 75 years of Musgrave Harbour announces his sudden passing on Wednesday, February 4, 2009. Predeceased by his parents, William and Beatrice Pope; sister, Myrtle Rogers and brother, Stewart. Passed away on Monday, February 9, 2009 at Bonnews Lodge in Badger's Quay, Mr. Everett Mouland of Musgrave Harbour in his 87th year. Predeceased by his parents Josie and Carrie; wife Doris; grandson Michael and two brothers Charlie and Walter. 74 of Newtown Passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at Brookfield Hospital. Predeceased by his wife, Asetha; three brothers, Harold, Bram and William; three stepsisters, Nellie, Laura and Triphenia; five grandchildren, Roseann, Terrence, Trudy, Priscilla and Ivan. Passed away suddenly on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at Brookfield Hospital, Neta Andrews of Otterbury Manor, Wesleyville, age 88 years (February 17). Predeceased by her husband, Lester (2001). MATHESON, Helen May -
The death of Helen May Matheson, wife of the late Edgar Matheson, occurred on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born 1920 in Montreal, Que., she was the daughter of the late Albert and Ethel (Mercer) Sheppard. Helen worked as a Savings Clerk at the Bank of Nova Scotia for several years. She is survived by two daughters, May Matheson-Thomas (Aubrey) of Yarmouth, Maine and their daughters, Megan Thomas Genthner (Michael) and Aubin Thomas, both of Maine and one great-grandson, Max Genthner, Maine; Marie Matheson (Nick Soper) of Gander, NL and their children, Robin Soper, California; Hilary Soper and Katie Soper of NL. Arrangements are under the direction of Fund Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, (646-2424). Memorial service was held at Fundy Funeral Home Chapel on March 4th. At Helen's request, no flowers.
