Comments from Newfoundlanders Hospitalized during WW I

During the First World War my Aunt, Lillian Orsato, who was then about 21 years old, visited one of the London Hospitals where they had taken wounded soldiers from various battles.

She took with her an autograph album which I now have as a treasured possession. There are entries written by Lance Corporal Leonard Sheppard, Private Dicks, Lance Corporal R.G. Chafe and Cpl E.F. Chafe.

Donated by Sue White

What if the best of our wages be
An empty sleeve, a stiff set knee
A crutch for the rest of our lives
Who cares
So long as the one flag floats and dares

When the golden sun is setting
And your mind from care is free
When of others you are thinking
Will you sometimes think of me

I wish you health and happiness
I wish you gold in store
I wish you heaven when you die
How can I wish you more

I be D-----d if you will.
You fool, you should have torn out this page
before making so rash a statement.
Look before you leap the next time.
