Newfoundland War Memorials
St. John's City

The National War Memorial in St. John's
It was erected at King's Beach on Water Street.
It was unveiled on Memorial Day, July 1st in 1924 by Field Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig.

Construction of the memorial was supervised by Lieutenant-Colonel Father Thomas Nangle,
the R.C. Padre of Royal Newfoundland Regiment.

The four Memorials in front are transcribed below. Starting on the Left and moving to the Right

In Perpetual Remembrance of the Men and Women of the Canadian Forces, and other Canadians, who served and sacrificed their lives as part of International efforts to protect the Rights and Freedom of Humanity, and to bring Security and Stability to the people of Afghanistan.

This Memorial is erected by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, in cooperation with the Newfoundland/Labrador Command of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Provincial Military Family Resources Centres, and was unveiled by the Hon. Danny Williams, Q.C., Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, in the year 2006 A.D., during the Reign of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

"At The Going Down Of The Sun And In The Morning,
We Shall Remember Them"

To The Glory Of God and in Perpetual Remembrance of members of the Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Air Force, and other United Nations Forces, who gave their lives in the cause of Freedom and in defence of the Principles of the Charter of the United Nations. in the Forces of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, and any other Canadians who paid the Supreme Sacrifice during the Korean Conflict.

This Memorial is erected by the Korean Veterans Association and was unveiled by the Lieutenant-Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador in the year 1980 A.D.

We Shall Remember Them"


To The Glory Of God and in Perpetual Remembrance of One Hundred and Ninety-Two Men of the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve. Thirteen Hundred Men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. One Hundred and Seventeen Men of the Newfoundland Merchantile Marine, and of all those Newfoundlanders of other Units of His Majesty's or Allied Forces who gave their lives by Sea and Land for the Defence of the British Empire in the Great War, 1914-1918. For enduring witness, also, to the Services of the Men of this Island, who, during that War, fought not without Honour, in the Navies and Armies of their Empire.

This Monument is erected by their Fellow Countrymen and was unveiled by Field Marshal Earl Haig, K.T., G.C.B., O.M., etc First of July 1924.

"Let Them Give Glory Unto The Lord And Declare His Praise In The Islands".
Isiah 42-12

To The Glory Of God and in Perpetual Remembrance of Seven Hundred and Thirteen members of the Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Artillery, Newfoundland Regiment, Canadian Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, other Army Units and Two Hundred and Sixty Six Members of the Mercantile Marine who gave their lives in the cause of Freedom while serving in the Forces of His Majesty King George the Sixth and all those Newfoundlanders who served in Allied Units and who paid the Supreme Sacrifice during World War Two.

This Memorial is erected by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and by the Royal Canadian Legion and was unveiled in the Silver Jubilee year of Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second. November Eleventh, 1977.
