The Regimental Mutiny

Royal Newfoundland Regiment Mutiny

An Army powder shed which occupied this site was chosen as a place of rendezvous by fifty United Irish mutineers of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment on the night of the 25th April 1800. Nineteen men stationed on Signal Hill deserted their posts and met as planned. But others from Fort William and Fort Townshend were prevented from joining. In June 1800, five of the mutineers were hanged on gallows erected on this site [now corner of Barnes Road and Belvedere Street] after being found guilty of Mutiny by a General Court-Martial
