Fishing is extensively engaged in by the inhabitants; Ferryland has a good harbor with lighthouse situated at what is known as Ferryland Head. Coastal steamers call regularly from St. John’s. FORTUNE BAY, an extensive inlet of the Atlantic, on the south coast, lat 47dg. N., long. 55dg.  W. giving the name to a district on its north side. It contains Brunette Island, and at its entrance are the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon.

 

FORTUNE HARBOR, a post and money order settlement in Twillingate district. Contains postal telegraph, express, 1 store, 1 Catholic church, Bowring Bros. and Reid Nfld. steamers call during open navigation.

FOURCHETTE (or FOURCHE BAY), north of White Bay, in the district of St. Barbe, has a splendid harbor. A short distance up the river are magnificent falls of same name about 200 feet high.

GRAND BANK (FORTUNE), a post and money order office, telegraph, preventive station, fishing, farming and shipping town in Burin district. A port of call for Reid Nfld. steamer from St. John’s to Port-aux-Basques, and from Placentia, 125 miles; banks, St. John’s, 265 miles. A steamer makes fortnightly trips from St. Pierre, Miq. returning day after arrival. Contains 11 stores, several boarding houses, Newfoundland express, 1 saw mill, reading-room, 1 cod liver oil refinery, court house and jail, Masonic Hall and Salvation Army barracks. A large business is done here in the foreign export of fish and Bank fishing. Place has grown much in recent years.
