RENEWS A large fishing settlement on the Straight shore, south of St. John's, in the district of Ferryland. This settlement was amongst the first in the colony. It was at one time of considerable importance and is still a place of some trade. The harbor is ot very good, being shallow. The cod fishery is carried on to a large extent by means of net and seines. It is a port of entry. Distance from St. John's by road 50 miles, and from Ferryland by road 16 miles, and by steamer from St. John's fortnightly 50 miles, fare $2. Mail weekly. Population 859. |
