Lovell's 1871
Provincial Business Directory
LA MANCHE
A mining settlement on the north east of Placentia Bay, district of Placentia. A lead mine has been worked here with varying success during the past 14 years. A large quantity of galena has been extracted from the different shafts, but still it can hardly be said to have been altogether a success. At the present the mine is being worked carefully and the prospects seem better than they have been for some time. Distant from Chance Cove in Trinity Bay 7 miles, from Little Placentia 12 miles by boat. Mail fortnightly. Population 128.
