Taken from the Directory:
--------ABBREVIATIONS USED IN THE ALPHABETICAL DIRECTORIES OF CITIES, TOWNS, &C.: -ab above; av avenue; bds beards; bet between; ch church; cor corner; h house; J.P. Justice of the Peace; n near; opp opposite; r rear; R. catholic Roman Catholic; sq square; wid widow. The names in CAPITALS are those of Advertiser and Subscribers. In Cities and Towns, where av, lane, or sq does not follow the residence, street is understood; for example, Lovell John 23 St Nicholas, means 23 St. Nicholas street. As several places are known by more than one name, and as great pains have been taken to ascertain and give these, a reference to the GENERAL INDEX is specially recommended. This will prevent the least delay in finding any place in the work.
