Hopewell

Population in 1966 was 376

Hopewell forms part of the incorporated community of Conception Bay South which includes Lance Cove, Hopewell, Upper Gullies, Riverdale, Talcville, Manuels, Chamberlains and Topsail within its boundaries. Hopewell is a community which follows the Conception Bay Highway, with housing sprinkled on land on both sides of the road. According to E.R. Seary (1971) Hopewell was listed in Lane's Directions of 1775. The settlement was probably named for the English family or place-name "Hopewell," although Seary, quoting L.A. Anspach (1827, p. 77) notes that there were two armed ships named the Hopewell and the Chancewell which were equipped for a Newfoundland voyage in 1597. According to H.M. Mosdell (1923, p. 60), a schooner named Hopewell out of Harbour Main was wrecked at Cape St. Francis in 1875.
