Beniah Norman

St. John's

This photo of my grandfather, Beniah Norman, was taken
when he was 18 years of age in St. Johns, NFLD. Ben was
born in Catalina, NFLD. on July 12 1885 and died in
St. Johns, NFLD. Aug. 19 1942. Ben's father, a carpenter
named Thomas Rose Norman ( 1862-1926 ), moved his
family to St. Johns from Catalina, NFLD. in 1892 where
he found employment in the rebuilding of the city after the
great fire. Ben's mother, was Eliza Jane Minty born in 1852
in Bird Island Cove, NFLD. (B.I.C. was later renamed Elliston)
Eliza's father William was the Bird Island Cove schoolteacher
& stipendary constable, Ben became a bookkeeper and was
wed to Annie Simmonds in St. Johns on June 14 1903.
They had 9 children, one of which was my father,
Arthur Ronald Norman. ( 1916-1986 )
