Villa Nova c1886

Manuels
c1886

A photo of the St Thomas of Villa Nova Orphanage, Manuels, CBS.  The premises
were built by Father Michael Morris as a church and orphanage.  He was the older
brother of Prime Minister Edward P.Morris ( l908 to December 31, l9l7) and
then lst Baron of St John's and Waterford. Father Morris was my first cousin
thrice removed (first cousin to my great grandfather Edward Emberly of
of Joe Batt's Arm). My gg grandmother Bridget Emberly (nee Morris)
was his paternal aunt. His dad was Speaker of the House of Assembly
in l855 when NL gained Responsible Government. He was also
Edward Morris and MHA for St. John's West too. He was
born in Waterford, Ireland and came to Newfoundland
at age l8 and married Catherine FitzGerald
in St John's, NL.

The orphanage's history is chronicled under
"Priests of the Archdiocese of St John's".
