Thomas Wells

Jamestown, Bonavista Bay
c1915

This is my grandfather Henry Thomas (Tommy)
Wells born 1886 in Jamestown, Bonavista Bay.
When the first world war broke out, Tommy
sailed to England and enlisted in the Royal
Navy . (Where this photo was taken).
He served aboard the H.M.S. Cornwallis at
the rank of seaman, saw action at Gallipoli
and two years later was torpedoed....
by German submarine U32, 60 miles
southeast of Malta on the 9th January, 1917.
"Tommy and the rest of the survivors spent
9 hours in the frigid water before being rescued
and treated for wounds and exposure"
