St. James Anglican Church - Interior

King's Cove
St. James Anglican Church (interior)

On September 15, 1896 work began on the present Church of St. James.
This was to replace the first Church which was destroyed by fire.
Caleb Marshall was the Chief Builder.

The quick construction of the Church (we are uncertain of its completion
date) was due to the fact that the Rector, Rev. Kirby, was non-sectarian
and openly welcomed Roman Catholic workers. Rev. Kirby was one
of many dedicated clergy who served the parish. The first was Rev.
Rev. Henry James Hancock who arrived here in 1838. But it must
be said that Rev. Kirby holds the unique honor of having faithfuly
faithfully served the people of King's Cove as an Anglican Priest
and often as a medical practioner for forty-nine years.

It should be noted that the present tower replaced the original which had
weakened over time. The original spire reached a height of seventy-five
feet. Also of interest is the fact that the pulpit is on the opposite
side of most Anglican Churches.

The nearby cemetery hold much interest. It dates back to the beginning
of the community and includes the headstone of one of the founding
members - Mary Hancock - dated 1784.
