Hubert & Gasgar Charles Garland - c1916

Lower Island Cove
c1916

Photo of my great grandfather Hubert Garland (seated in the chair),
and Gasgar Charles, standing behind him, looking very serious!

Uncle Gasgar Charles Garland was killed in the initial attacks on
the Hindenburg Drocourt- Queant lines, in the final push to win
the War, under the command of General Arthur Currie. Military
Intelligence from those days discusses the bravery of the men
overrunning the trenches of the Germans, the trenches filling
with German and Canadian dead and wounded, supplies
moving forward, and the men so enthusiastically and
bravely - so far out in front that they were all mowed
down. He was one of the company of soldiers
leading the apex. His 19th battalion seemed
not to exist after this date. He was buried
where he fell at Vis En Artois, along
with many others of his company.
