SURNAME
Gussets Cove Cemetery Project
By Cindy Salvato

During a 2015 trip to visit family in Newfoundland, my cousin, Lawrence O'Leary, took us to an old church cemetery known as Gussets Cove. The cemetery is located of the road and the original church that stood there was knocked down when the new Northern Bay church was built. Over the years small groups worked at keeping it up, but was left for lost for the last 30 years.

The following year we put a plan together to clear the cemtery, and we dedicated several days over three years. The clearing invloved bush cutting, weed wacking and small tree removal. We trucked out over 10 loads of brush during the first weeked. We found, old graves marked with nothing but a simple rock at the foot and head and 6 headstones laying in the ground in need of repair.

In addition to the cleanup, through researach, we found many ancestors that were laid to rest at Gussets Cove. We also learned that the name of the church that stood on the cemetery grounds was called Star of The Sea. It is believed that this church was the first Roman Catholic Church in the area.

Since we started the project, many other geneologist have found ancesters that they have been looking for for years. This project has been a labour of love and our hard work with the shared with the community at a Mass and garden party in August 2018.

Thank you to all of you supported us financially, we couldn't have done it without you!

A very special thank you to all the folks who worked tirelessy in the cemetery and loaned us trucks, tools, camp stoves, blessings and more.
