My interest in this cemetery started with my first visit to it in the early 1980’s in search of the graves of some of my ancestors from Trinity and English Harbour. During that and subsequent visits I transcribed as much as I possible. What struck me was the number of stones so damaged that only partial transcriptions or no legible information was retrievable. Over the years since I have continued to research this cemetery and have found a number of headstone transcriptions from this churchyard in newspapers, periodicals, journals, family histories, community histories and old photographs. Among the sources have been the weekly “Trinity’ column written by William J Lockyer in the Evening Telegram from 1919 to 1925, Lockyer’s earlier writing in the Free Press and the historical writings of Canon Warwick Smith. The result is this compilation of headstone transcriptions. - Dave Wells |

When William Bugden his widow ordered a headstone from England, as was customary in those days. When it did not arrive the following year she assumed the vessel carrying it had sunk on the way to Trinity and placed another order. In the meantime the first order arrived in Trinity and was placed at the head of the grave. The following year the second headstone arrived and was placed at the foot of the grave]

However, when the new church was built, it left the stone covering the grave exposed on the ground. This caused the stone to become so damaged and eroded that about 100 years ago it was sent to England to be restored. This restored stone is what is now located in St. Paul’s Churchyard on the site of Rev Clinch’s original burial]
