Presentation Cemetery
Renews,
Ferryland District

This small burial plot is located on a knoll behind Holy Apostles Roman Catholic Church in Renews and is generally referred to as the Presentation Cemetery. It is the final resting place of two priests and twelve nuns who served this parish from the mid 1800s onward. The Presentation Sisters initially established a convent at Admiral's Cove (now Port Kirwan), Fermeuse in 1853.The first Presentation Sisters, mainly from Ireland, arrived there under the patronage of the local parish priest, Father James Murphy. About 1867, Father John Walshe moved the parish centre from Admiral's Cove, Fermeuse to Renews. However, it appears it was not until 1876 that the Presentation Sisters were relocated to the new convent that had been for them built a short distance from the parish church in Renews.
