NEWELL'S ISLAND

ANGLICAN CEMETERY

Bonavista District

Unlike Ship Island and Batterton's Island, Newell's Island never had a land connection to main "Pond" Island, yet its population was sometimes included as part of the total population of Greenspond, except in 1911, when Newell's Island was listed as having a population of 114 persons in 23 households. The family surnames at that time were Burry, Carter, Cooze, Hunt, with one person whose surname was Durham. After 1950 all families left Newell's Island . While he was holidaying at Greenspond during the summer of 2009, Charlie Etsell, who is married to a descendant of Newell's Island, collected the information below from the headstones in the old Anglican Cemetery. Transcribed and submitted by Domino Howse.
