Third Session of the Sixth General Assembly
"1856 List of Resident Population on the French Shore
from Cape John to Ferole, including St John's Island"
Report of James L. PRENDERGAST, J.P. From her Majesty's Hired Brigatine “Charles”, dated 1st September, 1856 as recorded in the Third Session of the Sixth General Assembly of the 1857 Journal of the House of Assembly of Newfoundland Prendergast noted “ During my stay on the French Shore, I obtained a list of the permanent residents from Cape John to Ferole, including St. John Island, many of whom deplored the want of means to educate their children; a Roman Catholic clergyman occasionally visits some of the most populous harbors." Transcriber's note: There were no Protestant churches, or clergy or schools of any denomination recorded for the area listed in this report.
