Turk's Gut | Marysvale The community of Turk's Gut was renamed during World War 1. At that time, the Newfoundland Regiment was fighting the Turkish army at Gallipoli, and it was decided to rename the community. The south side of the community, largely Catholic, was renamed Marysvale, after Queen Mary. The north side, largely Protestant, was renamed Georgetown, after King George V. The river separating the two halves leads back to Turk's Gut Long Pond, which has retained its original name. Updated with additional information by Andrew Collins (2025) |
