Newfoundland Disasters
Pilley's Island (Green Bay) WWI Victims
The following are names of the young men from Pilley's Island (Green Bay) who died as a result of their service during WWI. These names are inscribed on a monument located on a hill near the old Methodist Church at Pilley's Island. Arthur PITTMAN killed Dec.3, 1917 aged 24 years; Pierce RIDOUT died Apr. 27, 1918 aged 23 years; John DEAN, died Aug. 9, 1918 aged 28 years; Adolphus LOCKE died Dec. 3, 1918 aged 22 years; John James MAY died Oct. 18, 1918 aged 20 years; Henry SIMMS died Oct. 25, 1918 aged 21 years; George B. JONES died July 1, 1917 aged 24 years; Stephen JANES died July 1, 1917 aged 22 years; George SIMMS died Dec. 30, 1915 aged 27 years; Albert Edgar GUY died Nov. 30, 1917 aged 20 years; Edgar [?] BLACKMORE died Apr, 14, 1917 aged 21 years; Frederick B. RICE died Aug. 17, 1917 aged 21 years; William C. HUSTINS died Apr. 2, 1920 aged 27 years. At the time of copying this list, night was closing in and I hurriedly noted the names as they were read out to me, so for the surnames JONES and JANES, I cannot fully trust my notes here - it could be JANES or JONES but I believe it is as written. |
