Newfoundland's Grand Banks Message Board

I am looking for information on my Gr Grandmother Smith who was the second wife of Aaron Smith, born in Newfoundland in 1864. They had two daughters, Elizabeth (Aunt Liz) born about 1896 and my Grandmother, Sarah Jane born 1898 in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. The story goes that my Gr Grandmother passed away in childbirth around 1901 but I have not been able to confirm that. Some of the names that I've heard in reference to her over the years are: Hannah (maiden name Smith), Elizabeth(surname unknown) and Hannah Eliza (surname unknown). I believe my Gr Grandparents lived in Black River, Shoal Harbour and Sound Island. I know Gr Grandfather Smith later moved to Sunnyside (Bay Bull's Arm), Trinity Bay, Newfoundland.

Grandfather's third wife was Selina Vaters and they had two children, Elsie (Maude) and Aaron (Brittle). Maude and Brittle grew up in Sunnyside, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and later moved to the United States.

I have not been able to confirm his first wife's name but I believe it was Elizabeth Gosney. They could have been married in Sound Island, Placentia Bay. They had a son, Alexander (Sandy) and a daughter (name unknown), both born in Newfoundland.

I am hoping that by finding the family of my Grandmother's biological mother we may find the source of various medical issues that were inherited by myself and other members of my family. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Married on Nov. 9th 1895 at Sound Island, Aaron Smith age 31yrs. Widower, Fisherman, Church of England of Shoal Cove and Ann Eliza Smith age 25 yrs Spinster, Methodist, of Shoal Cove.

She died in childbirth on May 17th 1901 .

Sandy Smith married twice - first to Bessie Moulton and then to Frances Piercey. I don't know if there are any children still living from his first marriage, but there are three in Sunnyside from his second - Alonzo, Bessie Smith Brown, and Eldred. I believe another one of his children lives in Hodge's Cove.

Aaron Smith (1863-1941) was married three times.

Hiw first wife was Elizabeth (Bessie) Gosney. She was the daughter of William (or maybe Alfred) Gosney. Alfred Gosney came here when the first transatlantic cable was landed at Sunnyside in 1858. Aaron was from Sound Island and Elizabeth was from Black River. They had one son, Alexander (Sandy, 1891-1986).

Aaron's second wife was Sadie Gosney. Sadie's mother was Sarah (Gosney) Dooley. Aaron and Sadie's children were Elizabeth (Lizzie) who married Azariah Reid and Sarah Jane who married Nathan Churchill.

Aaron's third wife was Selina (Vaters) Moulton, from Red Head Cove, Rushoon. Selina was Aaron's son Sandy's first wife's mother. Aaron and Selina had two children - Elsie and Aaron.
