I'm from New Zealand and am searching for information about Alexander de Greis, my great, great grandfather. I've been given conflicting information by my family e.g. that his birth place is either St Johns, Quebec or Newfoundland. He was French Canadian, and his father (same name) was born in France and smuggled to Canada at 7yrs old. We believe Alexander George de Greis jnr was placed in the care of a whaling ship's captain as a child at maybe 7-9yrs old and left Canada.

* Seek info on parents of Alexander George de Greis, born 1838 or 1839 in St Johns.
* Parents possible birth places - Mother/Nova Scotia, father/France (same name).
* Seek name of captain and whaling ship he left Canada on at approx 7-9yrs old approx. 1845-1848

Any suggestions and leads would be greatfully appreciated.

kind regards Raewyn
