Hi,
I am also researching Barkers who lived in Ming's Bight at one time - my paternal side of the family. My GGgrandfather was also Robert Barker but he was known as "French Bob Barker". I believe he may have been an uncle or cousin to your great grandfather. During my search I have found the following which applies to your family: Joseph Barker baptized 13 Sep 1875 Coachman's Cove son of Robert Barker and Sarah Dobbin; and I have also found out that Robert and Sarah had a daughter Sarah Barker who married James Quirk, had 5 sons, and moved to the USA.
My Barkers came from Open Hall, Bonavista Bay and most Barker's on the island of Newfoundland are believed to have originated in the same area. At least the Barkers who can trace their relatives back to the late 1700's or early 1800's in Newfoundland.
My maternal side of the family are Walshs from Fleur de Lys and my gggrandmother was Mary Francis Dobbin who married John Louis Walsh in Fleur de Lys. Mary Francis was the sister of your ggrandmother Sarah Dobbin. They were the daughters of David Thomas Dobbin and Elizabeth Burke. Sarah Dobbin was baptized 22 Dec 1852 at Assumption RC Church, St. Mary's Bay.
I live in Baie Verte, Newfoundland which is only about 15 minutes drive from Ming's Bight. The communities you mention in your query are all part of the Baie Verte Peninsula and at one time Tilt Cove was the hub of the area. Do you know if your grandmother's brother John Barker married? If I can be of any help please let me know.
Alice

Hi,

I was wondering if you would able to point me in the right direction, Alice. My ggrandmother was Sarah Jane Barker or Jane S as she was come to have been known as and died O'Driscoll in Deer Lake c. 1970 as per her head stone. My mother was adopted out at a very early age and has only just gotten to know her family the past ten years and are still meeting family members. Unfortunately, most of her aunts who would haveknown much have passed on and her mother died early as well. When I asked my ggreataunt once, she mentioned that "French Bob" was a partof our history as well. I still do have family in Baie Verte as well, but they do not seem to know much. I did find my ggrandmother, Jane on the DL 1935 census with hus John O'Driscoll and family, but when I have been looking in other census', I am absoutely confused. I as well found Jane or Sarah in 1921 Open Hall census with her father as William and mother Mary. Is it possible that you would be able to show me the little bit of light at the somewhat beginning of the end search here??

Thank you,

Stephanie
