My 3 x great grandparents are Robert Joseph Alsop (1814-1871) and Ellen Whiten (married 11 June 1851) witnessed by "Mary Ann Whitten” in the St. John the Baptist RC Church.
http://sites.rootsweb.com/~cannf/as_mar ... 841-55.htm

An entry for the baptism register for 1860-69 for Peter Whitten and Anna Louisa CHAFE (nee BRINE)'s child (James Alfred, born Aug 27 1863) shows that the couple were married in 1862, and that “Peter Whitten was b 1837 Petty Hr, the son of George WHITTEn & Mary Ann CHAFE. Anna Louisa Brine was from Trinity, the dau(ghter) of John Brine”.

I am assuming that Peter Whitten (born in 1837) and Ellen Whitten (born about 1828) were brother and sister, and that their parents were George Whitten and Mary (Ann) Chafe.

Under "MARRIAGES 1824-1891”

http://ngb.chebucto.org/Vstats/vs-31-sj ... y-hr.shtml

the first few entries show:
- Nov 22 1824, Henry Chafe marrying Mary Ann Chafe
- May 24 1828, George WITTEN (WHITTEN?) marrying Mary Chafe

The register of Baptisms for Pre-1891 Registration, Volume 26A, Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, St. John’s, 1848 - 1852

http://ngb.chebucto.org/Vstats/pre-1891 ... -sjc.shtml

has the following note:
- June 6 1850, St. Johns, WHITTEN, George & Mary, Jane, July 7 1850, fisherman, CHAFE, "George Whitten & Mary Ann Chafe were md May 24 1828 Petty Hr ANG. Jane Whitten md 1872 to John Cornick of Bridport, Dorset."

My question is:

I assume WITTEN should be WHITTEN, but I am not sure if George married "Mary Ann" Chafe or "Mary" Chafe?

You have mentioned a few things that puzzle me. Perhaps you can clarify them if you will.

You state that Peter Whitten & Anna Louisa Chafe (nee Brine) had a son James Alfred. I wonder where you got the idea that Anna Louisa was actually a CHAFE, suggesting she had been married to a Brine? Their marriage clearly states that Ann Louisa was a spinster at the time of her marriage to Peter Whitten and her father was John BRINE from Trinity.

Your assumption that Peter Whitten and Ellen Whitten were brother and sister I believe is incorrect. Ellen was NOT the daughter of George Whitten & Mary Ann Chafe. George & Mary Ann were married in 1828 and their first child was Elizabeth Whitten born 8 Mar 1829.

It is possible that the Ellen Whitten your are looking at is Ellen Whitten, born @1829 St. John's, d/o William Whitten & Ellen French.

George Whitten (1795-1855), s/o Robert Whitten & Hannah Tucker, married 1828 Mary Ann Chafe (1806-1876) d/o William Henry Chafe & Jane Undry.

Your Ellen Whitten does not appear to be related to Peter Whitten, at least certainly not his sibling, as far as I can tell. Don't forget, Peter's family was Anglican while Ellen or her new husband were Catholic.

Hope this helps a bit! Good luck.
