Could anyone plese tell me the type of information given on original marriage certificates from about 1877? Are there parents names given, or ages of the bride and groom, or a bachelor, spinster and widow designation? Many thanks!

There was no civil marriage registration in 1877. The information provided in a marriage entry depends upon the religious denomination and the community. Anglican marriages often included the father's name and the groom's occupation. The Catholic marriage records for Bay St. George are detailed. Moravian marriage records are detailed.

Thank you, Edward. My folks were Methodist. Do you know about the information on their certificates? In January of 1877, in Greenspond, there was a marriage between Jane Wells and William Burton. I'm trying to find out if this William is the William born 1825, or the William born 1858 (who is his son). Many thanks.

My recommendation is to search for the probate records for the estates for the individuals you suspect may be the parents of William Burton and Jane Wells. In general, I haven't found the Methodist records too help in finding my ancestors. Another possible source of information could be the diary of the clergyman who married the couple.

Thanks for your info. I have recently applied to the Rooms Archives in St. John's. They have the originals. And, I was lucky. The original certificate for the marriage of Elizabeth Mary "Jane" Wells and William Burton said that the groom had been previously married. This means to me that the William Burton was William Sr. ie. the William born in 1825, not his son. Are you related to the Burton's? The Stephen Burton that you mentioned was my great-uncle. He was painting the ceiling of my Mum and Dad's apartment when he fell and fractured his skull and died. Best, pattiann

There is a lot of information concerning William Burton Sr and Jr on familysearch.org
the link is: familysearch.org/tree/pedigree/landscape/LKTH-536
You will find that William Sr married Julia Oakley(1834- 1876) on 1 Jan 1851 then 1 Jan 1877 he married Elizabeth Mary Jane Wells (1847 - 1935)
William Jr. married three times.
Trust you find this useful
