My grandmother, and her brother and sisters immigrated from New Chelsea in the mid 1920s. I'm looking for family members, possibly cousins who are still in the area.

What are their names? Where did they go to after leaving New Chelsea? More info would be helpful.

Hello, and thank you for your response.

The parents (my great grandparents) remained in New Cheslea until their death in 1928. Names were John Bursey and Annie Bursey (maiden name Harris). I have located census reports of John as an adult, just no records of him as a child. They had 4 children. Asenath, Reuben, Lavinia, and Pearl. All four immigrated to the U.S.A in the late 1920s. Thank you.

This information is from Birth/Baptism and Marriage Records for Hant's Harbour and surrounding areas, compiled and published by the Willow Tree Heritage Society, Hant's Harbour, Newfoundland.
I have no other information on this family.

I am related to the descendants of Simeon Bursey from Old Perlican who married my gt. gt. aunt, Druscilla Short.
Hope this helps!

Hello, and thank you again for your response.

I agree with your findings. There are two kids that you have noted that I was unaware of. Thank you! I'll research that further. I really appreciate the reference you've provided. I would really like to identify John's parents.

I wonder if Simeon Bursey is a Cousin of John. It is a very remote area.

Have a nice evening!

My records show that Simeon Bursey (b 1841) was the son of Richard Bursey & Judith Pike.
Other children were:
James b. 1839
Abraham b. 1843
Edmund b. 1844
John b 1850

A family tree by Darlene Young on Ancestry.ca also lists:
Selena Rebecca b. 1832
Athalia b. 1833
William b. 1845
and:
Parents of Richard Bursey (above) are Richard Bursey & Elizabeth
Grandparents of Richard Bursey (above) are Richard Bursey & Catherine Churchill
Great-grandparents of Richard Bursey (above) are Richard Bursey
Great-great-grandparents of Richard Bursey are Uriah Mitchell Bursey of Christchurch, Hampshire, England who died in Old Perlican, Nfld, and his wife Jane, and apparently, HIS parents are William Bursey & Mary Stevens of Milford, Hampshire, England.

If you do not have Ancestry, it is available for free at public libraries.

Thank you for the details for Simeon. Yes, I have ancestry.com. It has been amazing in my family history research. Unfortunately, it has not yet provided birth information for John C. Bursey.....I'm not giving up though! :)

If my research shows that we are in fact related, that would be very cool.

I appreciate your responses and information!

Re: Birthdate for John C. Bursey:

The date of May 1872 is from the 1921 Census for Seal Cove (New Chelsea) http://ngb.chebucto.org/C1921/21-new-chelsea-tb.shtml

In the 1935 Census, his age is given as 63 - no birthdate

And in the 1945 Census, his age is given as 73; again, no birthdate

(so these ages agree with the birthdate from 1921)

I'm sure you seen all this.
A primary source would be better, rather than the secondary source of a census, but as the dates concur, the info was probably given to the enumerator by John himself, or his wife (rather than a neighbour who may have just guessed).

Yes, I have gathered all the census reports on John that I could find. All of him as an adult. Unfortunately, I can not find any of him growing up. There is one reference of a John C Bursey's baptism, with a birth year of 1872, however, the mother would have been only 9 years old at the time of his birth. So, I've been trying to validate that this is in fact his mother....I would typically validate this by finding them on a future census report, and I just can not find one. In addition, there is another baptism (same parents, same child), dated 1877....Looks like the same event, just a typo on one of them. So, I'm not confident that these are his parents.

Thanks so much for reaching out and trying to help me. Means a lot! :) I'll get there!
