I am having trouble finding a definition of the occupation planter as used in Newfoundland and cited in many documents such as census, wills, etc. I gather it has to do with ownership, perhaps of a boat or fish processing facility, and having employees, as opposed to fisherman who might be a crew member on someone else's boat. Various dictionaries define planter as the manager or owner of a plantation, some adding that this refers to a large farm in tropical countries.

The "Dictionary of Newfoundland English" Edited by G.M. Story, W.J. Kirwin and J.D.A. Widdowson published by University of Toronto Press 1982 gives the following definitions:
1. A settler in Newfoundland as opposed to a migratory English fisherman 2. A fisherman and owner of a fishing premises, boat or small vessel who, supplied by a merchant, engages a crew to work on the share system 3. Migratory fisherman from Newfoundland who conducts summer fishery from a 'station', 'room' or harbour on the coast of Labrador - sometimes called a roomer or stationer.
Trust you find this useful.
