I’m looking for information on barrels from Boston. I understand that Newfoundlanders settled in Boston sent care packages back to NL. Those packages were known as barrels from Boston. Were they actual barrels? Did it refer to any package sent from Boston? If they were barrels, what did they look like? How large? What types of things were in the ‘barrels’?
Many thanks

Hello, Yes, they were staved wooden barrels. In our family, we got them until the late 1950's once or twice a year, shipped from New York State. We still have a couple in the attic and they are large, about 3 ft. high and the lids about 2 ft. in diameter. They could be packed with almost anything non perishable. For us the barrel was filled mostly with new clothes, blankets, sheets and anything our uncle thought we could use. Perhaps our Grandmother sent him a list. Moss
