According to the book "Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland" Shute is a name of Devon and Dorset. The earliest instance of the surname in Newfoundland is Robert Shute who was an agent in St. John's in 1780.

Robert Shutt arrived in Harbour Grace, NL in the mid 1820s. There is some evidence to indicate that he may have come from Paignton, Torquay, Devon however that has not been confirmed.
His name first appears in St. Paul's Anglican Church records as a witness to a couple of weddings during that time.
He married Julia Nosary sic (Noseworthy) of Bryant's Cove, NL Nov. 11, 1828 at St. Paul's Church Harbour Grace.
Children from that union are:
John Shute b. c1829
William Shute b. 16 Feb. 1832
Ann Shute b. 22 Jan. 1834
Mary Jane Shute b. 1 Oct. 1836
Stafford Shute b. 9 Nov. 1838
Amy Shute b. 25 July, 1841
All children were baptized at St. Paul's Church, Harbour Grace. The name "Shutt" morphed into "Shute" when the children's baptisms were registered in the church records.
Robert dies sometime between 1841 and 1846.
Julia Shute widow of Harbour Grace marries Richard Marshall Harbour Grace at St. Paul's Church 10 Nov. 1846.
