Hello: I was wondering if anyone has any information on my grandmather, Josephine Batterton, born 01/08/1906. I'm pretty sure she had a sister, but not sure of her name. I believe her father was James. I know she had at least one brother named Thomas that died as an infant. She left NL several times in her teens and eventually married my grandfather John O'Neill of Trepassey and they settled in Somerville, MA USA. I have read of the history of the first lighthouse on Kng's Cove and just curious if she is from the same Batterton family. Thanks for reading and appreciate any info - John O'Neil

John O'Neil,
You are related to one of my O'Reilly family from Cambridge, Mass. The Battertons came to Greenspond from Ireland. I think the first one was Nicholas. One of his sons was James Batterton who married twice, and was a lighthousekeeper-at Kings Cove, I think. I believe his second wife was Anastatia MacKay.
You will find alot of information in the Greenspond Letter. Linda White has posted several articles about the family-one of the only Catholic families on Greenspond. There is a place called Batterton Island there. My distant cousin visited Greenspond in the 1990 and met people who knew his family. I think my cousin's grandmother was Louise Whelan-her father was a Whelan and her mother was a Batterton. She married Patrick O'Reilly-they relocated from Placentia to Cambridge Mass. They both died in the 1940's but left a family of about 7 children. I think they moved to the US about 1890-1900. My grandfather often visited them. I have a family tree somewhere)). I will get back to you with that info-perhaps in the next week.
Take care

Hi Brenda:

Thank you for the information. I know my grandmother made a few trips to the US before finally settling here. From what I can recall, I believe she did stay with a family in Cambridge, MA. You have sparked my interest in going back and finding out whom she stayed with.

I appreciate your help! - John

Hi John,
I was wondering if you would be willing to share information. I have a data on a lot of the families from Trepassey (and surrounding areas). Currently, I have 151 O'Neil(l)'s in my data. I would love to add to my research. I looked, and I don't have a John O'Neill married to Josephine Batterton. Please let me know.
Thank you,
Chris

Hi Chris:

I would be glad to share any info I have. My grandfather's family can be found on this site in the 1921 census. They were from Long Beach. My great-grandfather was Cornelius and my great-grandmother was Mary. There were 11 children in the family with my grandfather John O'Neiil, being the oldest (born in 1897). He married my grandmother, Josephine Batterton, in Massachusetts, but I'm not sure in which city. That can be easily found out.

As for the rest of the O'Neill siblings, they all relocated to the United States, most settling in New Jersey, but a couple here in Massachusetts. I can pry my father's brain to find out whatever particulars he knows.

Regards, John

John,
I wonder if she stayed with the O'Reilly family in Cambridge-maybe on Frog Pond Road. The family were related to my OReilly Whelan family of Placentia. The mother was a Whelan Batterton from Greenspond-Kings Cove I believe. I have a Josephine in the Batterton tree but have no marriage for her.
Take care
BRenda
