Looking for any info on Thomas Brown in the Bay Roberts Area that was born or married in the late 1700's to early 1800's. He had a son William Brown in 1825.

Thanks
Len

Hi Len, I think I can help you out -- I have been researching the Browns looking for answers for my family (which haven't been found yet...)

Thomas and Elizabeth Brown had the following children in Bay Roberts:

William b. about 1825
John b. about 1836
Thomas b, about 1838

While there are no baptism records available for these 3 births, these are all confirmed in 1889 VL for Bay Roberts, River Head, which confirms their age, father Thomas and where born. All four (incl Stephen listed below) also show up in the VL lists for 1858, 1874 and 1882 as residing Bay Roberts, North Side.

They also had following children baptized St Matthews, Bay Roberts 1837-1848, PANL

Elizabeth May 24 1840
James Jan 8 1843
Mary Jane May 13 1844 (marr. Abraham Russell Nov 30, 1859, bros John, Thomas witness)
Stephen July 6 1846 (he is also in the 1889 VL)
Caroline Aug 19 1848

Thomas Brown Senior was born about 1801, since he died in Bay Roberts and was buried Jan 31, 1849 at age 48.

Children of William b. 1825 and his wife Sarah:

Thomas James b.Oct 9, 1850, buried May 8, 1851 at 7 months
Patience b. Oct 6 1851
Mary Ann b. Mar 9 1853
Frances B. May 30 1854
William Charles b. Feb 24, 1858, buried Apr 25, 1859 at 14 months
James b. Apr 7, 1861, buried Mar 16, 1861 at 3 months

Sarah wife of William buried Mar 16, 1862, age not given.

There may be other children for William and Sarah, but these are the ones that I think , for the most part, aren't online.

Hopefully this helps!
Carol

Also, I see online that William remarried after the death of Sarah -- in 1864, a widower, he married Mary Ann Sharpe... but you likely knew that....

Thank you Carol for your help in this research. William is my Great Great Grandfather. I can't seem to find records for Brown's for the late 1700 and early 1800's. Do you have a link for the voters lists you referenced? Were there other Brown's there other than Thomas?

Thanks again
Len

Hi Len, none of these records are online, including the VL records. They are all at PANL. Voters Lists are in Box 17.

Additional info beyond my earlier email as follows

No Browns in Bay Roberts in 1855.

In 1858, there was a William Brown at Coley's Point. (this could have been your William.)

1874 and 1882 as previously listed -- the 4 sons of Thomas.

in 1889, these are additional names

Nathan Brown age 30 in "Bay Roberts proper" born Spaniards Bay, father Solomon.
Wm H Brown age 25 in "Bay Roberts River Head" born Bay Roberts, father James.

No idea who these fathers Solomon and James were, who their parents were, etc.

I am trying to find my ggg grandmother Susannah Brown b. 1823 (married Philip Vokey), I have wondered if she could be a daughter of Thomas -- he seems to be the only family having children in the period. But she was of Spaniards Bay -- maybe she could be a sibling of this Solomon above...

These are the only surviving VL's for the area, and can only be seen at The Rooms. 1889 is always a treasure because there is so much more info collected.

Hi Len, me again.

Thinking a bit more...I think it is likely that James b. 1843, son of Thomas Senior, would have been of age to be the father of William H born about 1864, as per 1889 VL? And James 1843 could have a) died young, or b) was not of stature to be on the VL list? After all, the residence is BR River Head, which is where all of Thomas' sons lived.

On the father Solomon of Nathan b. 1859 -- he would have had to be born circa 1840's, I guess he could have been an undocumented son of Thomas. Again, he could have a) died young, or b) not been of stature to be on the VL list. But he is in Spaniard's Bay...not to say that he might not have moved from River Head -- it happens... :) However, both the names Solomon and Nathan (Nathaniel?) are not names associated to your Thomas Senior family line -- correct?

Do you have anything at all on the Spaniard's Bay Browns??

Thanks,
Carol

Thank you again for your help, no, as far as I can tell Solomon or Nathan is not a name carried through my Brown lines. I did , however find the following that may be of interest to you;

Nathan born Jan 30, 1855 to Solomon and Susanna Brown of Spaniards Bay.

Married on Dec 9, 1834 Solomon Brown Bachelor of Spaniards Bay to Susanna Gosse Spinster of Spaniards Bay.

Thomas Brown married Agnes Baker at Spaniards Bay 1835.

William Brown married Emma Collins Spaniards Bay June 5,1823.

Elizabeth French of Hr. Grace sold land to her brothers Thomas and Edward Brown on June 2, 1836.at Hr. Grace.

Thomas Brown of Bay Roberts Drowned age 48 yrs. and was buried 31 Jan 1849.

Edward and Catherine Brown of Hr. Grace had following children;

Mary Bapt. Nov 18, 1801
Elizabeth Bapt. Feb 7, 1803
Elizabeth Bapt. Dec 27, 1803
John Bapt. Oct 27, 1805
Hannah Bapt. Dec 20, 1807
Catherine Bapt. Dec 30, 1811
Thomas Bapt. July 3, 1813

Whereas Spaniards Bay is close to Hr Grace it would be likely that some Brown's moved there. I haven't checked into this as I was looking closely at the Bay Roberts Brown's. I recorded these as I was going through records at the Rooms.

Your Susanna could be of Solomon and Susanna Brown, i.e. named after her mother.

Hi Len, thanks for this info.

Susanna was born 1823, calculating from her burial record, so she is most likely to be a sibling or cousin to Solomon who was likely born about 1814 +/- based on a marriage in 1836.

I will say that Philip Vokey and Susanna Brown had a first child William Henry, and named the next son Philip. Given that Philip was the son of a Philip, who was the son of a Philip, this is an interesting clue. Later, they also had a daughter later named Emma. Circumstantially, this could be a clue, as you mention the couple William and Emma below that wed in 1823....

I think this is the right family line in general, sure would be nice to find a bit more data to confirm how and where she fits in!

As a side note, after Susanna Brown, the name Susanna carried throughout the line. Her daughter, my gg grandmother was Susanna Vokey, and my mother was named for her :)

Thanks so much for your help.

Carol

Thank you Edward, I am wondering if those petitions are on line? I have him dying on Mar 19, 1896. I am wondering if there is a mistake somewhere as his headstone says 1896 also.

Thanks
Len

William's estate was probated in 1896 so perhaps I misread the handwriting. His probate file is online at www.familysearch.org

Thank You. Now if I could find where his father Thomas Brown came from and who he married and where, would be great.
You gave me information I didn't have and I thank you very much.

In the 1889 Voters List for Bay Roberts it says the following;

Thomas Brown 64 years in Colony and District Riverhead
William Brown -Age 64 yrs
John Brown - Age 53 yrs
Thomas Brown - Age 51 yrs
Stephen Brown - Age 42 yrs

I would believe that since Thomas Brown drowned in Jan 1849 that reference to Thomas in the Voters List would be to identify his sons. Seeing that Thomas Brown was 64 years in the Colony and Riverhead District of Bay Roberts in 1889 and his eldest son William was 64 yrs old in 1889 then I believe he came directly from somewhere outside Newfoundland and was either married or got married when he arrived there and his son William to be born that year he arrived.

I would take it from this that he arrived in the Colony in 1825 from parts unknown.

Headstone Found in the Bay Roberts Old Cemetary; It reads "BROWN - William of Thomas", Born Jan 6th 1825 and died March 17th 1895 age 70yrs. Erected by his five daughters.

The probate record says he died Mar 17th, 1896.

The death record says he died Mar 19th, 1896 age 67.
