I have been researching my family history for a few years, much progress but still gaps. I have researched the Grand Banks website extensively and it has been an enormous help (thank-you!). I have also tapped other sources. I will be in Newfoundland in September, visiting PANL, MUN, other institutions and various communities. Interested in vital statistics but also family stories and historical context. I welcome any new leads and advice. Willing to share what I have learned.

Taylor: Of Middle Bight (now Conception Bay South) in early 1800's, possibly earlier arrival from England in another part of Conception Bay. Moved to James Cove (now Jamestown) in late 1800's, to Millertown in 1920's.

Winters or Winter: Earliest record on Pool's (formerly Fool's) Island, Bonavista Bay, 1800's. Moved to Valleyfield between 1890 and 1910. Moved to Millertown between 1915 and 1930. Surname variously with "s" or without.

Stratton: Thomas Stratton arrived Greenspond, probably from Dorset, England, in about 1785, plus or minus 15 years. Some Strattons later migrated to other parts of Bonavista Bay North.

Greenslade: Earliest record Long Pond (Conception Bay South), mid-1800's. Caroline Greenslade married Jacob Taylor of Middle Bight, moved to Jamestown. Jacob died 1890, Caroline believed to have lived in Boston with sons about 1890-1909. then returned to NL.

Parsons: Johnathon Parsons of Lumsden married Patience Butt (?), daughter Sophia Parsons (1841-1921). Sophia may have had a brother named Silas.

Thanks, all!

Hello,

I'm not sure if the Jonathan Parsons being discussed here is "my" Jonathan Parsons. I'm looking for a bit of information about the Parson's of the St. John's area. My ggg-grandfather, John Henry (JC) Parsons (b. 1806-1814, d. 25 January 1871) may have lived in Newfoundland before immigrating to the United States (first New York, and ultimately Philadelphia) by the 1840's. His father was probably a certain Jonathan Parsons, who I understand was a famous watchmaker in St. John's. Jonathan, and for that matter, John Henry, may very well have been born in England before coming to Canada. Does anyone have any further information on this Parson's line? My email address is southern_dude21@hotmail.com. Thanks!

Tim
