Hello

I was wondering if anyone could assist me.

My grandfather, James Leo Power (born on 9th March 1920 ) lived in Bonavista Bay until he left for Scotland during the Second World War. . There is also a James Leo Power whom I have managed to find in the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit (I think his service number 2341(Home Guard) was that stated that he resided in Broad Cove.

James’s mother was Mary Kate Fitzgerald and his father was Thomas Power. Whilst in Scotland James and Isabella had six children (Anne, Mary (who is my mother), Margaret, James, Patricia and Josephine)

James had brothers and sisters. I believe that they are:-
Joseph Power (I believe Joseph to have been unmarried)
Margaret Power (whom I believe married a Maurice Carew)
Mary Power (whom I believe married Michael Shea)
Patrick Power (whom I believe married ‘Helen’ and they had a son named William)

I then went into the 1935 Census for Broad Cove – Bonavista Bay and found that there was a house (dwelling number 175 / Family Number 167) with most of those I named residing in it. There was one discrepancy (no Mary but there is an Elizabeth)

It is my intention to soon visit Bonavista Bay. Can anybody tell me anything of the family or if any remain in the area or perhaps advise me how best to progress?

Thank you very much in anticipation.

Fiona Bett
