Can anyone tell me if this George Davis was a merchant of Topsham, Devon, Poole, Dorset, London and Carbonear, Newfoundland. He was baptized on March 11, 1724-25 and died in Newfoundland (possibly Carbonear) in 1789, was my grt grt grandfather's ancestor? My Grt,
Grt Granfather was George Davis (1807 - June 12, 1882, married to Sarah Ann Jacobs (1916 - April 29, /1889.
I am trying to find out because if so then that means the Davis House which has been
preserved under the Heritage Foundation is the house my grt grandfather, and grt, grt grand-
-father grew up in....
I have a stone my dad (william d moore- mother Ethel Amelia Davis) brought back from the
Davis house for me to keep....he felt I should have it as my middle name is after my grandmother's maiden name Davis.
I would really appreciate knowing as I have a picture of it saved and would just like to know if this is my ancestor?
Appreciate any help, as I have tried to keep looking, but don't think the birth records go back
that far.
Thanks Karendavis65

Hi Karen,

I'm new to the NGB Message Boards. I saw your query about the Davis family. I'm sorry I can't tell you if your Davis line is connected to Davis House. I find the Davis line in Newfoundland is hard to trace. I don't think there are too many of them. My great-grandfather was William Davis of Bonavista but I hit a brick wall at him. Nothing. Not even a birthdate. Or where he came from. Glad to hear you've had much better luck.

Happy hunting.

Hi Karen,

The Davis House was built by Eli Davis your GG Uncle, a son of George Davis and Ann Jacobs. It is still in the family, beautifully restored and occupied. See www.heritage.nf.ca/articles/society/davis-house.php for more on the Davis House.

I am aware of the George Davis Merchant but have not yet made a connection.

Your George Davis 1807-1882 was the son of William and Jane Davis. They had 6 children George, Richard, Alfred, William, Francis, and Amelia.

I have photos of George and Ann Davis's headstones in Freshwater. I have recorded 542 descendants of George Davis including you and myself (your 3rd cousin). George was married 3 times 1) Patience ? (one child) 2) Jane Pottle (No children) and 3) Ann Jacobs (12 children) including your great grandfather Joseph and my great grandmother Sarah Lilias.

There were many members of the Freshwater Davis Family that moved to Mass. My father's 1st cousin (90 yrs old on Aug 1-2015) was home for a visit last month. He has lived in Concord, MA for many years, and has been back home many times.

Thank you all for your input and information....it is exciting to find ones lineage after all this time and each new connection I have been able to find with all of your help has been great!!
I am sorry I did not answer your replies earlier, but I have been out of commission for some time after a stroke and heart attack....part of the (Moore(s) heritage that our family has all had to
deal with!!
Many thanks again for all your assistance and its good to be back on the site!!
Sincerely, karendavis65
