Post subject:  immigration from Cornwall to Newfoundland

Catherine, daughter of John & Mary WHITE, was born 2 Feb 1858 and baptized 18 Apr 1858 at Petites.

There are no other baptisms in the Petites Methodist records for children of John and Mary, but from 1860 there are several children of John & Elizabeth and John & Dinah. It appears that Mary died soon after the birth of Catherine, and either Elizabeth or Dinah is the second wife.

Catherine married Thomas Henry SHEPPARD 7 Jul 1875 at Bonne Bay (Methodist). Her death record states she was born at Petites.

DNA testing of 3 great-grandchildren of Thomas and Catherine has yielded a cluster of matches which link to descendants of Thomas Cross GREGORY and his wife Alice MITCHELL, of Gwithian, Cornwall. Through much emailing back and forth with a Gregory researcher across the pond, we have identified one Mary Gregory, born 1816 at Gwithian, as a candidate for the identity of Mary, wife of John Sheppard. Mary Gregory appears in the 1841 and 1851 English censuses as single, a shop assistant, and living in Falmouth, Cornwall. After 1851, she disappears from English records, with no marriage or death record yet found.

(interestingly, a first cousin of Mary's, Albert Gregory, 1847-1914, emigrated to Grand Bank before 1875)

Is it likely that an unmarried woman would have immigrated from Cornwall to Newfoundland in the 1850s? Were there other Cornish families along the South Coast, to whom she might have had some connection in Falmouth?
