I am looking for the children of Isaac Russell and Martha Parsons from Bay Roberts. I have been told that their children were born from 1843 to 1853. I have located three daughters, who were Ellen (b. 1845), Amelia (b. 1853), and Lizzie (b. 1856). Even though Lizzie falls outside these dates, her relationship to Ellen and Amelia is verified by Amelia's obituary in 1926 under the surname Kearley.

Any all assistance or leads in locating the missing siblings will be greatly appreciated. Thanx for all you do.

Yours in genealogy,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Their children that I am aware of were:

Esther bapt. June 4, 1843 (died in Labrador in 1885, drowned along with 2 of her sons)
Ellen born July 28, 1845, died 1935
John born April 15, 1848, died 1942
Amelia born Oct 18, 1850, died 1926
Elizabeth “Lizzie” born May 31, 1853, died 1930, single, shares headstone with her mother

John coincidentally married a Lizzie Russell born 1856, so maybe that’s where you got the date for Lizzie of 1856 that you mention below?

Regards,
Carol

Dear Carol,

Thank you for your assistance in locating the missing children and the information about each one. It is amazing how Esther and John both wed people with the surname Russell. What a tragedy for Esther's family losing her and two sons at the same time. You have definitely given me additional lines to research. Thanx again for everything you do.

Mark

Hi Mark,

It was a tragic story. Esther had married a Russell as well — Stephen Russell of Coley’s Point. There was a schooner named Excel that went down near Black Island, Labrador. The incident was known as “The Great Tragedy of 1885”, and 22 people — mostly from Coley’s Point — died in the wreck, including Esther and her 2 children.

Dear Carol,

Thank you for the information about the tragedy that claimed Esther's and her sons' lives. It puts how truly dangerous traveling by schooner could be, due to the unpredictability of the weather.

I came across a description of the tragedy. I cannot imagine what Stephen, Esther's husband, felt as he watched the schooner break apart and he could do nothing from the "safety" of the shore to save his family.

Yours in genealogy,
Mark
