Post subject:  Looking for information on the Gregory family

My grandmother was Eliza Morgan Gregory, she married James William Welsh and they had three children, Arthur, Mary and my dad Charles. She sadly died the day after giving birth to my dad. I know nothing about the Gregory family other than her father who was Albert Gregory born in 1847. Does anyone know whether there any other Gregory’s related to Albert. They lived in Grand Bank. Any information would be helpful

Hi Jean,

Albert Gregory and his wife Esther (nee Cox) baptized 5 children, born in Grand Bank as follows: Mary Ann Aug 5 1877, Daniel May 23, 1880, Susanna July 18 1885, Arthur Sep 1 1888, Eliza Morgan Nov 14 1892.

They married in Grand Bank on Sept 29, 1875; he was residing at Harbour Buffett, she at Grand Bank. Interestingly, his death register states he was born in Scilly Cove (Winterton, Trinity Bay). He died May 31 1914 in Grand Bank - poor man, it states he died from shock following a fracture. Esther died Aug 20, 1921, the record confirming she was born in Grand Bank about 1951.

Esther Ann Cox was born Oct 16, 1851 to Daniel Cox and his wife Esther (nee Nicholls); they married October 12, 1835 in Grand Bank. Her siblings were: Susan Mar 28 1837, Henry Aug 6 1842, Eliza Jun 19 1844. Note that Esther’s sister Eliza married a James Morgan; she would be your grandmother’s namesake!

My 3rd great-aunt married a Moses Gregory born about 1848 in Scilly Cove. There were not a lot of Gregory families, so perhaps he and Albert were related...no data though...

The only candidates I note of the correct vintage for Albert’s parents in the area were a John and Mary Gregory in Old Perlican (near Scilly Cove) who baptized 2 children in 1828 and 1830, but there could be others — records were just so poor back in the day. There were also a couple of illeg children born to Gregory females in the 1840’s in Old Perlican.

Perhaps following some of Esther’s siblings, or your Eliza’s siblings might give you some good information to widen your search.

Happy hunting! This is a good site for research!

Carol
