Would someone explain the term "pans" of seals mentioned in the Greenland Disaster of 1898? I thought I had it figured out until "One of these pans creased her, cutting her bottom out and yet supporting her till the ice opened releasing her to sink like a stone."

Wiki doesn't know what a pan is when relating the word to seals, nor can I find any other definition for it. Thanks for any help.

They are referring to 'pans of ice'. Flat pieces of ice which breaks away from the main body at the flow edge. The pans are several feet thick and many shapes and sizes. I imagine the reference means that the pans of ice sliced through the hull of the vessel. Consequently, a 'pan of seals' is a pan of ice with a bunch on seals on it! When I was young we used to 'copy on the pans'. Good luck with that one. I would guess that only the Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in the audience would know what that means!
Cheers
