I'm looking for a birth/baptism record for a Mary Ann Evans. I would like to find out who her parents were however i've had a few problems in my search. The earliest record I've found is her marriage record to Alfred Hayes on 12 Dec 1865 in English Harbour West (age approx 19). I've been to the Rooms to look at the Church of England microfilm for Belleoram but she doesn't appear to be in the records. Does anyone else have any information on an Evans family from the area?

Saw your note on Facebook, here is what I've found;
There are three families on Ancestry.ca, one has Mary Ann Evans born 20 April 1846, one has just 1846 and the last has 1848. Two have her parents as James Evans (1821-1880) and Jane Kearn (1828-1909) and one has Alfred Thomas Evans (1805-1879) and Elizabeth Betsy Thornhill (1803-1891). Mary Ann Evans birth records are not in any church records that I can find as the church she was married in does not start records until 1850. Mary Ann Evans married an Alfred Hayes on 12 Dec 1865 in English Harbour West (C of E) as per NL records. They had two children in NL, Anne Matilda Hay (seems to have lost the "es") 18 Feb 1869, English Harbour West and Emily Elizabeth Hay, 1870, Bapt. 13 Nov 1870, English Harbour West.
After that they seem to have moved to the USA, 1880 US Census has
Alfred Hay 40 born Canada
Mary Hay 34 born Canada
Anna Hay 11 born Canada
Emma Hay 9 Born Canada (Emily Elizabeth?)
Jenny Hay 8 Connecticut
Bertha Hay 0 Massachusetts
1900 US Census, Chelsea, Mass
Alfred A Hay 62 Newfoundland
Mary Hay 54 Newfoundland (Birth date recorded as Oct 1846)
Evelyn M Hay 20 Massachusetts
Edith B Hay 18 Massachusetts
1920 US Census, Chelsea, Mass
Mary A Hay 73 widow Newfoundland with married daughter Edith B Rice and her family

This makes me wonder if I have a family mixed up.
Originally I was helping a friend find information on an Elizabeth Hayes m. Stephen Hanrahan (my friends line comes down through their son Richard). I do not have a marriage date for Elizabeth and Stephen but by the 1921 census in Little Bay, Burin Stephen is listed as head of the household, Elizabeth is absent and the following entry is Richard (son of Stephen) So I am assuming that this is the family we were looking into. I went to familysearch.org and found a death record for Elizabeth Hanrahan 26 Jun 1918, Little Bay, Burin aged 49 (putting her birth at around 1869). When I found the birth record for Emily Elizabeth Hayes born to Alfred and Mary Ann Evans in 1870 I though this could be her. But clearly she didn't move to the states, unless she came back and married Stephen Hanrahan (of Marystown) and they moved their family to Little Bay, Burin?

There is a Elizabeth Hayes-Stephen Hanrahan family on Ancestry, but there is NO information to speak of in it.

The death record for Elizabeth Hanrahan says Roman Catholic and a death register for a Stephen Hanrahan. 10 March 1923, Little Bay, is also Roman Catholic. Roman Catholic records for Newfoundland are few and far between, they didn't like to share the information with the government.

And records for the Marystown parish went up in flames in 1925 :-s (was hoping to get a baptism record for Stephen as the 1921 Little Bay census states his birth place is Marystown)

"the Rooms" says most Marystown RC records pre 1909 were destroyed in a fire, they show some baptisms 1895-1922. They show Burin St Patrick's Parish RC records, Baptisms 1833-1957, Marriages 1833-1904 and Burials 1915-1916, I don't see any of these records online.

I'm the great grand-niece of Mary Ann. Her parents were Thomas Evans and Elizabeth (Betsy)
Thornhill of Brunette, 1804 - 1891. She had seven brothers and sisters.
James (my ggrandfather) 1832 - 1902
John W. abt 1834 - 1901
Alfred Thomas 1836 - 1914
Jane 1839 - 1921
Sarah Ann 1832 - 1926
Wilson 1849 - 1889
William J. 1853 - 1930

I have all of their children if you would like them.

Kathleen

Thank you Kathleen!

I'm wondering if Mary Ann's daughter Emily Elizabeth Hayes is the same Elizabeth Hayes that married Stephen Hanrahan("Handrigan") in Burin? I may have a different Elizabeth Hayes :-s
