Post subject:  Keith Matthews' Files

Hi Everyone,
I wonder if anyone has ordered any of the Keith Matthews' files offered by the archives holdings at Memorial Univ. I am interested in the BAKER file. I am a bit confused by the quote I was given ($95.00). On the site, it gives the price of a mailed photocopy @ $0.15/ page. The quote they sent me was based on $.50/ page. Not sure what's going on there. I sent a reply asking for clarification.
Incidentally, the BAKER file contains 191 pages.
Any info that would educate me is greatly appreciated
Thank you,
Stephen Baker

The late Dr. Matthews was my thesis adviser and I have used his name files many times over the past forty years. He used a wide variety of sources, some of them collected in the United Kingdom. You may wish to order just the Baker files for the first names you are interested in which would reduce the cost.

Thanks Edward,
Apparently the cost was reduced from $0.50 to $0.15/page. The original quote was from 2015. That's great news, for it makes the whole file affordable.
What types of sources did Dr Matthews use? Do you think its possible the file may contain info on everyday fisherman from the 19th century?

Dr. Matthew's name files cover all of the families who settled in Newfoundland prior to 1850.
The name file slips are written in shorthand. For example:

ANGEL
1712 CO 194/24 Sam nfld.
1729 CO 194/8 Sam constable
1755 Col. Rec. 26 Sept - JN owes 37 pds to bankrupt Robt Milller
1790 Jan - Newm Jour Fox bill to JN 30 pds
1819, 19 July -Journal Edward lost premises in fire
1826 CO 194/72 Edward householder Water Street

CO 194 refers to the government records
Co. Rec refers to Colonial Records
Newm Jour refers to Newman & Co. journals
Journal refers to a newspaper called the Mercantile Journal

I recently ordered a number of the Keith Matthews files, including Angell, Hitchcock and others. I found the information very helpful, sources as diverse as court records from 1794 to merchant accounts, wills, and McAlpines Directories. The key that is posted on their site for interpreting some of his abbreviations made things much easier. My file was about 35 pages and cost $18 including shipping.

Great info, Thanks! Did you order the complete files, or selective names within the files?
