I am trying to trace the family of William Doyle (1830 - 1909) married 26 Nov 1869 Julia Anne Stockwood (1849-1931) of Gull Island.

I have 11 children for William & Julia Anne: Mary Ellen; Peter; Julia Anne (possibly married 1902 Michael Kinsella); Patrick (married Martha Flynn OR Mary Hogan?); William; John (married 1910 Alice O'Neill); Arthur (married 1908 Norah Kinsella); Bridget; Elizabeth; Mary Joe; Timothy

I'd like to know the parents of William Doyle and Julia Anne Stockwood as well as siblings - so many Doyles in the area!

I'd like to confirm/match marriages for their children.

Arthur Doyle (1881-1946) married 1908 Norah Kinsella (1887-1951); they had 7 children: William J.; Michael (married Bridget Oliver); Marcella; Gertrude; Adella (married a McGrath); Patrick (married Marie UNK); Kevin (married Frances UNK).

Further information on these people would be appreciated. I'd like to know Bridget Oliver's background.

Michael Doyle (1912-1973) & Bridget Oliver (1920-1944) had two children: Margaret (married 1959 John Chafe); Joseph (born abt 1940 Gull Island - ?). I'd like to know about Joseph as well.

I'd be grateful for any help at all and am most willing to share what I know.

Hi Trishe,

My English family from Job's Cove married into your Doyle family with the marriage of John Doyle (c.1782 Kilkenny, Ireland) and Eleanor English (1790 Job's Cove). They were married at Harbour Grace on April 2, 1810. Eleanor English was the daughter of John English (1765 Northern Bay) and Eleanor Fogarty (1769 Northern Bay). John English was a son of Thomas English (c.1728 Piltown, Kilkenny, Ireland and died about 1795 Job's Cove).

William Doyle (1829 - 24 Mar 1909) was one of 12 children (all born in Gull Island) to John and Eleanor. I extracted the baptism dates (of those found) from the Harbour Grace RC register held at PANL (Box 1). I have 10 children (including William). The other 9 are: James (bap. 1 Mar 1811); Michael (1812); John (bap. 21 Jan 1814 and died 25 Mar 1889 Gull Island); Mary (bap. 13 Oct 1815); Eleanor (bap. 23 Sep 1817); Timothy (bap. 2 May 1819 and killed by sledding accident on 27 Jan 1839); Catherine (bap. 12 Jun 1821); Johanna (bap. 14 Jun 1823); and Arthur (1826 and died 14 Aug 1897 Gull Island).

I have not researched the family of William Doyle and Julia Anne Stockwood. However I can tell you that their son William J Doyle (born Gull Island and baptized 5 Apr 1877 Corpus Christie RC Church, Northern Bay) married Ellen J English (born Job's Cove and baptized 1 Dec 1881 Corpus Christie RC Church, Northern Bay) on 7 Jan 1905 Corpus Christie RC Church, Northern Bay. Ellen was the daughter of Richard English and Mary Murphy.

If you would like additional information on the English family, I would be very happy to share.

Wow. I'm overwhelmed, to say the least. Thank you so very much Greg and Ed for all the information on the Doyle and English families. I have been digging for a week or so and thought I did very well, considering all the common names and lack of cemetery records. I will do my own due diligence now, of course, in regards to finding source records. I truly appreciate all the sharing from you both and hope I can repay the kindness in some way, someday.

One further question, who were the parents of Celestine Doyle?

As Ed knows, I may return with more questions!

Trishe

Greg, I'm back with more questions on the English family. I hope you can help.

You told me that William J. Doyle (1877-1935) married Ellen J. English, d/o Richard English & Mary Murphy. Do you have any dates on Richard & Mary and who their parents were? Also, where can I find source records for them?

We discussed John Doyle (1785-1835) and his 1810 marriage to Eleanor English, d/o John English & Eleanor Fogarty. Marriage record source? Now I know that John Doyle had a brother Michael Doyle (1779-1877) married ?? to Elizabeth English. Was Elizabeth possibly a sister to Eleanor? Do you know where I can find information on her and Michael and any children?

Thanks! Hope I can help you in some way in return.
Trishe

Richard English was baptised at Northern Bay on 6 January 1847, the son of Edward English and Mary McLoughlin. He was a sea captain and his nickname was “Foxy Rich”. He married at Northern Bay to Mary Murphy of Jobs Cove on 27 November 1875. Rich died 2 August 1931 at Job’s Cove.

Mary Murphy was baptised at Northern Bay on 3 September 1849, the daughter of Edward Murphy and Ellen McDonald. She died at Job’s Cove on 29 August 1936.

The oral tradition in the Doyle family is that four brothers immigrated from Co Kilkenny – James, Morgan, John, and Michael. John settled at the top of Gull Island hill and his brother Michael settled near the brook. Michael Doyle (c1779-1877) married Elizabeth English on 19 November 1824. They had six children: Michael, bapt. 17 February 1829; Elizabeth, bapt. 25 August 1830; Mary, bapt. 20 May 1832; Arthur, bapt. 11 February 1835; Timothy, bapt. 10 April 1838; and Ellen, bapt. 14 July 1841. Analyzing the choice of Godparents and naming patterns for both the Doyle and English families suggests that Eleanor and Elizabeth English were likely sisters, possibly the daughters of John English and Eleanor Fogarty. All of the baptisms and marriages prior to 1838 were recorded in Roman Catholic registers at Harbour Grace.

Thanks Ed! All this is huge help. Still have to place Edward English.

My problem is that I cannot find the baptisms and marriages for the period prior to 1838 for Northern Bay. I'm sure I found them before but they are not on the Harbour Grace Vital Records site. The only RC records there start at 1838. The Parish Records section states that since the Northern Bay records were "Vital Records", they were sent to that section but where are they? I don't mind doing my own due diligence but can only due it if I can find the records in the first place :)

I made a mistake stating that James, Morgan, John, and Michael Doyle were brothers. James and Michael were brothers, and John and Morgan were brothers. James and Michael were first cousins to John and Morgan.

Unfortunately the early Harbour Grace Roman Catholic baptisms are not online. The marriages are listed on rootsweb however. I went through the baptismal registers years ago at the provincial archives when I was researching my book on the North Shore. The priest visited the North Shore twice a year so the baptisms and marriages tend to be in the spring and autumn.

Edward English was baptized 11 June 1814, the son of Richard English and Martha Tilley. He died at Harbour Grace circa 1854/5. He married Mary McLoughlin on 24 September 1835. She was born 15 August 1820 at Tintern, Co. Wexford, Ireland, the daughter of Philip McLoughlin and Alice Kinsella. Mary died 23 October 1894 at Job's Cove.

Thanks Ed!

Ron Howlett also has Michael, John, James & Morgan as brothers, sons of Arthur Doyle & Ellen UNK. I just had a letter from him today mentioning them.

Found the 2 marriages for the Doyle family and Edward English's on NL Genweb - thank you for pointing me in that direction. I forget sometimes to look there.
