William Dawson was born September 1836 at Bay Roberts, the son of James Dawson
and Mabella Russell. He died 20 December 1922 at Bay Roberts.

Mary Godsell was baptized 9 November 1845, the daughter of John Godsell and
Alice Whelan of Spaniards Bay. She died 10 October 1918 at Bay Roberts.

They had at least eleven children: Mary, John, Alice, Thomas, William, James, Margaret,
Patrick, Bridget, Joseph, and Catherine.

Margaret Bella was my great grandmother. She died December 9th, 1966 and is buried at St. Theresa's cemetery on Grand Lake Road in Sydney. I remember seeing Tom's picture in Cassie Brown's Death on the Ice. I also remember Alice visiting my great grandmother.
I would love to find out any and all information you have on this branch of my family.

Do you know how many siblings Margaret Mabella Dawson had? I have eleven possible names. I do not know what happened to Mary, William, James, and Patrick Dawson?

Do you know anything about the ancestry of Bartholomew Hussey?

I don't know anything about Bart Hussey except he was born abt 1875 in NFLD, and died 24 June 1942 in Sydney, Nova Scotia. I believe that he and Margaret Bella had 3 children.

As for William and Mary, I have them as having 7 children. John M, Alice, James, Margaret Bella, Joseph, Kate and Mary.

This is the info I have on James- married Jennie M Crocker Olsen In Gloucester, Mass on 8 Jun 1913. She was a widow from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Her parents were Roland Crocker and Julia Gerring. I have no other info on them.

I can give you info on Joseph Dawson. He was my husbands grandfather.

Interviews with Dawsons in Bay Roberts suggest William Dawson and Mary Godsell may have had more than seven children. I am trying to confirm whether the following individuals are their other children:

MARY (c1868) married Patrick Delaney of Boston
THOMAS (c1872-1960) married Mary Walsh of Harbour Grace
WILLIAM (c1873)
PATRICK (c1880) married Minnie Breen at Whitney Pier
BRIDGET (c1884) married Thomas Power of Brigus

I have Patrick married to Minnie Breen. But I believe he was also married to a Mary Steels and they had one son, Michael Dawson. My Bridget was Josephine Bridget married to Martin Delaney of Sydney, NS., not sure about Thomas, however I believe he was in the Newfoundland Sealing Disaster. I think his picture being taken off a boat is in a book. I have a William Dawson whose parents were Patrick Dawson and Ellen French. Too many names the same. May I ask where you live. There is a cemetery in Bay Roberts that has many of our relatives. http://ngb.chebucto.org/Cemetery/cem-ba ... c-hg.shtml Pictures included.
I am still having problems with William's parents. I know they were James Dawson and Mabella Russell, but the dates are way off.

Bella and Bart Hussey had 6 children. Mary Ellen Hussey was born March 9th, 1902. She died August 26th, 1988. Mary married John Joseph Neville (Jack) from the Grey Islands, NFLD Jan. 15th, 1931. She was 28. Francis was born approx. 1904. Frank married Susie Campbell, from Dominion, C.B on Sept, 24th, 1929. Age is listed as 25. He lived most of his life in New York. Gus Hussey died when he was 10. I found a death certificate showing that an Augustus Hussey age 10 died July 26th, 1918 in Otterbury, so that would suggest he was born in 1908. According to info online, Otterbury is minutes away from Bay Roberts. Given the name, age, and location, I am assuming that is the correct Gus Hussey.
Kathleen Hussey married Frank Campbell, from Dominion, C.B. on Sept. 6th, 1932. Her age is listed as 22 so her year of both would be approx. 1910. She died in 1988. Note Frank & Kathleen’s spouses were brother and sister. John Hussey was born December 27, 1918. He never married. He died of tuberculosis May 6th, 1941 at the age of 22. Barbara married John Coady from Margaree, C.B. I do not have her date of birth or death but I believe she was the youngest.

James Dawson was born c1797 at Callan, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. He died at Bay Roberts on 21 March 1856. His wife Mabella Russell was born circa 1808 and she died after 1860. They were married 15 June 1826. I suspect Mabella was expecting a baby because their first child Thomas was baptized 1 November 1826. Thry had 11 children and Mabella gave birth every two years.

William Dawson was born September 1836 at Bay Roberts and he died there 20 December 1922.

Patrick Dawson seems to have married twice - first to Minnie Breen in 1903 and then to Catherine Weir in 1905.

According to info posted online Bridget Josephine’s Dawson married Martin Delaney on Feb. 18th, 1919. According to her marriage certificate, she was born in Bay Roberts and her parents are James Dawson & Anastasia (Whelan?) Mother’s last name is hard to read. The bride signs her name Josephine. Is her father James, William’s brother? An uncle to Joe, Bella, Alice, etc. However I also came across Annie Dawson marrying Bernie Galloway who lists her father as James and mother as Margaret Brazil. Her sister Agnes married Joseph Butts. Similarly, when looking for Patrick, I came across a Sylvester Dawson born in Bay Roberts May 7th, 1888 who lists his parents as Patrick Dawson and Helen French He died July 27th. 1941 at the age of 50. Sylvester would be the brother of William mentioned by Sydney 6060. I am assuming these are cousins to the children of William Dawson and Mary Gottsell/Gottsew/Gotsun.

I found a Bridget Dawson from Bay Roberts that married a Tom Power May 6th, 1909. Attendant was Catherine Dawson.(Her sister???)

Bridget Josephine Dawson (1896-1983) was the daughter of James Edward Dawson (c1870-1918) and Anastasia Whelan (c1877-1914). She was the grandaughter of Thomas Dawson and Ann Brophy.

Anastasia Dawson (1901-1991) and Agnes Mary Dawson (1903-1925) were the daughters of James Dawson (c1863-1904) and Mary Margaret Brazil (1867-1950). They were the granddaughters of Richard Dawson and Anastasia Walsh.

Sylvester Dawson (c1888-1941) was the son of Patrick Dawson (c1848-1922) and Ellen French (c1859-1937). He was the grandson of James Dawson and Mabella Dawson.

I have been told that Bridget Dawson who married Thomas Power in 1906 was the child of William Dawson (c1836-1922) and Mary Godsell (1845-1918).

Sylvester Dawson married Theresa Genevieve Mary Murphy. They had 2 children. Victor Ronald Dawson (1931-?) and Pamela Dawson (1932-). Theresa is buried at Resurrection Cemetery. Not sure where Sylvester is.

Victor married Olive Monica Leblanc and they had 4 children. Ronald Sylvester b. 1965, Patrick Clement b. 1966, Brian Victor b. 1968, and Monique Anne b. 1970.

Pamela Dawson married Michael Anthony Paruch (1926-1994). They had 1 son. They are all from Sydney.

Do you have any information on Bart Hussey who was Barbara Coady's father?

With respect to the Ed's comment about what happened to James, Carole posted this yesterday. More support for Susan's information that he ended up in the states.

"There is a 1925 record for a border crossing in Vermont on Family Search. It is unmistakably for your Bartholomew, he is travelling to Massachusetts to visit his brother-in-law James Dawson, and it names his wife Bella. On this record dated June 1925, it states that he is 49 years old and is a carpenter, born Brigus."

Thanks for this Elaine. I'll have to look it up myself. Do you mind my asking who Carole is? You can send me an email or private message me if you'd like. Or ask her to get in touch with me.

Thanks again,
Susan

Book 6 of the Vital Records Register of Deaths for the Harbour Grace District 1911-1912 lists an unnamed Dawson, age 37, born in Bay Roberts, dying of tuberculosis in December and being buried in Bay Roberts. The age is right to be one of the William & Mary Dawson’s children. Is there any way to find out who this person might be?

I was also told this week that Mary’s second name was Frances. I have not verified this.

Michael Dawson (c1850-1908) and his wife Frances Shea (c1860-1894) both died of TB. Little is known about their family. Perhaps the Dawson woman who died in December 1912 was their daughter. She has no headstone and I could not locate an obituary.

I finally have a copy of my great grandmother's obituary which was published in the Cape Breton Post on December 10, 1966. Although it does not list her siblings, the following excerpt is of interest.
"The last surviving member of a family of ten children, she was born in Bay Roberts, Nfld., and had been living in Sydney for the past 43 years."
So there you have it, not seven children, not more than eleven, William and Mary Dawson had ten children.
