Hi,
Planning a trip to Newfoundland to do some research on family and locations associated with family. Any information and leads folks here might have is greatly appreciated!
My Grandmother, Martha Grace Budgell, was born in 1906 in Brown’s Cove, a settlement of just two families where her father, Peter Budgell worked in a sawmill owned by his wife’s brother, Henry Langford. In 1914, the family moved to house built by Peter in Hall’s Bay, Springdale. In 1915 Peter passed away from pneumonia, leaving Suzanne Budgell, his pregnant wife, and five children, including my Grandmother.
Henry Langford brought the family back to Brown’s Cove. Within a year, Suzanne decided to send the three boys (Nathen, Peter and George) to the Grenfell Mission in St. Anthony. She then took a job keeping house for John Critch, a widower with eight children in Big Harbor Deep. In moving, Suzanne kept her youngest child, Eva, while the oldest, Bertha and Grace were sent to live and work in other households - Grace to Little Harbour Deep.
Suzanne married the John Critch and they moved into the house built by Peter in Hall’s Bay. Eventually Grace was contacted by an uncle, Joseph Langford (the youngest brother of Henry Langford) who had moved to California...he brought her...and that's how a branch of the family landed in the Los Angeles area.
So...that's the story so far.....looking forward to any leads that may develop from it.
Cindy
