I have hit a dead end .... my great-grandfather was John Thomas Stewart he was born in Fox Cove, Newfoundland approx. 1867. He married Phoebe Eliza Jaden (has also been listed as Gaden and Gaten) Miles. My problem is I can't locate any other info on him. Family legend has it he was from a very large family and was traded to another family for food ( I believe a sack of flour and a sack of potatos). I'm told the church in Fox Cove that held the info i am seeking burnt. I don't know if this was his name before, or just after he was adopted. He settled in Boxey where they had their children. William C. Stewart (b 1910), Edwin (b. 1912), Lucy (1914), Ernest John (July 3, 1917 - Feb 15 - 2000), Melita (1919) and jessie (n/a). Hoping someone has info to lead me somewhere.

I think I'm hitting the same brick wall. My ggrandfather was William Stewart born 1878 and lived in Jacques Fontaine next to his brother Jonathon who was born in Fox Cove in 1873. I haven't been able to come up with their father. There were Stewarts also living in Langue de Cerf which is directly west and south of Jacques Fontaine. There's also a William Stewart b. in 1855 in Fox Cove living in Harbour Breton. I'm sure they are all connected somehow.

It is very possible. But like i say I am unsure whether Stewart was his original name or it came from the adoption. I feel like i keep ramming my head against a wall. Lol

The Family Search site has posted some Newfoundland Records at
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsea ... %3A1793777

I found the following in the Harbour Breton Parish Baptism records:
Parents Thomas and Martha Stewart
John Thomas Stewart Baptised Aug 19 1876 Langue de Cerf
William Edward Stewart Baptised Aug 19 1876 Langue de Cerf

I believe that my great-grandfather William Stewart was the son of Jonathon and Charlotte Stewart also of Langue de Cerf. John and Thomas might have been brothers. Langue de Cerf is to the south and west of St. Bernards (Fox Cove). It was largely abandoned when the schooner Omega was lost with a large number of the men from the small community. I also believe that the Stewarts originally came from Wreck Cove, which is across Fortune Bay.

I now can safely say that I assume you are correct that Jonathan and Thomas were brothers. Their parents were William Stewart and Susannah Elizabeth Ridgely. They had 12 children that I have found to this point:
1) Thomas b 1845 Miller's Passage
2) William
3) Isabella b. 1846 Wreck cove m. George Hare
4) Dinah b. 1844 Wreck Cove m. Ambrose Guy
5.) John (I am assuming short for Johnathan)
6.) Julia
7.)Mary Ann b. abt 1865 m. john Joseph Rose
8. Mary Ann b. n/a m. John Barnes in 1863
9.) Susan (Susie)
10.) Elizabeth m. George Anderson
11.) Margaret m. John Anderson
12.) Frances Ellen Stewart
