Newfoundland's Grand Banks Message Board

My late grandmother, June Clark, lived in Newfoundland and apparently a long time ago she had worked on a sailors boat or a fishing boat.
She was named a "Jackatar", and I am not entirely sure what a Jackatar is, I read that it is the mixture of French and Mi'qMak. I also know that she was adopted, and was not white, like the rest of my family.
If anyone has any information on a June Clark or the meaning of Jackatar please let me know
