Jane O'Flaherty was baptized 21 September 1823, the daughter of George O'Flaherty and Catherine Fleming. George was born at Youghal, Co. Cork, Ireland, and he drowned near Lower Island Cove circa 1826-1833. Catherine Fleming was from Fethard, Co. Tipperary, Ireland, and she married George on 26 November 1820. After her husband's death Catherine and their three children lived with her father at Long Beach, Northern Bay. During the famine of 1833 Catherine and her family received poor relief.
