I am searching for information on my Great Grandfather, Fred (Frederick?) Mitchell, his wife Phebe or Phoebe, their daughter Elizabeth and any siblings. As far as I know Fred never left Portugal Cove having found records of my Grandmother Elizabeth's visits to see her father however I cannot find death or burial records. I'm also searching for Fred and Phoebe's birth and their marriage record.

My Grandmother Elizabeth was born in Portugal Cove in 1898 and immigrated to the United States in 1922 followed by my Grandfather, Harvey Smith (possibly born in Bishop's Cove or Spaniards Bay in 1898) in 1923. They married in 1925 and had four children Margaret, Elizabeth (Betty), Harvey, and Nellie. Harvey (My Grandfather) had a brother named Max (Maxwell?) Smith.

I would really appreciate any help. Thank you.

Sheila Smith

Hi Sheila,
I have a small genealogy of a Mitchell family in Portugal Cove. There is a Fred Mitchell married to a Phoebe Miller, there are only three children listed, Flora, Jessie, & Sam. I find when people leave as in your Grandmothers case in 1898 the generations to follow don't remember them, unless someone took the time to write down the family info.

Newfoundland
1921 Census
St. John's East
Part 2 of 3
Pages 415 - 432 inclusive

MITCHELL Fredk. M Head Married 1865 Sep 56 Portugal Cove
MITCHELL Phoebe F Wife Married 1872 May 49 Portugal Cove
MITCHELL Samuel M Son Single 1900 Dec 20 Portugal Cove
MITCHELL Herbert M Son Single 1905 April 16 Portugal Cove
MITCHELL Jessie F Daughter Single 1911 Mar 10 Portugal Cove

At the time of the 1921 census your G Grandmother would have been about 23 & could have been working & living in St John's. before she left for the U.S.
